Title: Youth Programs Assistant/Facilitator
Department: Community Programs
Reports to: Youth Programs Coordinator
Remuneration: $15/hour (9 month contract; travel compensated)
Hours: Approximately 20 hours/week
Start Date: Week of September 26, 2016
Deadline: September 15, 2016
Other : M ust be available for lunch-time sessions at schools three or four days a week.

General Summary
The Youth Programs Assistant/Facilitator is responsible for leading youth programs for young women ages 12-15 within the HRM as well as supporting Youth OnLine Overcome Violence (YOLO-V). YOLO-V is a project empowering youth through technological skill-building and violence prevention programming in an effort to create safer online spaces. Duties will include: leading program design sessions with youth; assisting with development, implementation and evaluation of peer-led cyberviolence prevention programming and an online tool; planning and delivering programs at junior high schools; supporting youth to take leadership roles within their programs; assisting with Youth Advisory Council activities and events, peer leadership training and other special events; ongoing documentation and reporting; supporting youth to take leadership roles; ongoing documentation and reporting; and other duties as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education or lived experience in social work, international development, child and youth studies, education, health promotion, or equivalent
  • Direct work experience with at-risk youth and/or gender-specific programming
  • Experience with program planning and evaluation
  • Extensive experience using information and communication technology (i.e. social media, web development) to build capacity in youth and community
  • Interest in popular education
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Excellent work ethic and collaboration skills
  • Outstanding communication and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with specific communities in Halifax Regional Municipality (Halifax, Spryfield, Cherrybrook)
  • Solid understanding of issues such as violence against women (including cyberviolence), sexual health, poverty, discrimination, media influences etc., and how they impact girls and young women both locally and globally
  • Commitment to anti-oppression principles
  • Current First Aid and CPR training
  • Clear Child Abuse Records, Criminal Records and Vulnerable Sector Checks
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle necessary

Job Type: Contract

Salary: $15.00 /hour
