Nature & Scope:

The First Tee of Greater Vancouver YMCA is one chapter of an international non-profit youth initiative called The First Tee. The First Tee was created in 1997 by the World Golf Foundation to provide young people of all ethnic and economic backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship. By engaging young people in a combination of life skills, leadership, and golf activities, they also are exposed to positive traits that will help them achieve success in life. In the process, participants become valuable assets to their community. The First Tee Life Skills Experience is the unique component that sets The First Tee apart from many other successful junior golf programs and youth development programs through sport.

The Group Leader is responsible for impacting, influencing, and inspiring young people to become the best they can be through utilization of The First Tee Golf & Life Skills curriculum, The Nine Healthy Habits, and The First Tee Coach Building Blocks. The Golf and Life Skills Coach will report to the Manager, The First Tee and work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers.

Major Responsibilities:

 Actively interact with children, families, and youth in a positive and professional manner

 Build meaningful relationships through positive daily interaction with YMCA participants, visitors, and colleagues

 Welcome and assist participants, volunteers, potential donors, and parents in a polite and courteous manner

 Become proficient in creating/delivering fun, active, and engaging lesson plans that seamlessly integrate golf instruction with the life lessons, healthy habits, and core values of the six levels of The First Tee Life Skills Curriculum (Target, PLAYer, PAR, BIRDIE, EAGLE, ACE).

 Create and maintain a positive atmosphere and build positive self-esteem and confidence in children

 Establish and maintain positive communication with manager, colleagues, and parents

 Track and provide regular reports on participant progress including attendance, assessments, and class level recommendations in a complete and timely manner

 Manage daily operations, including accurate participant records

 Engage, lead, and inspire volunteers. This includes but is not limited to: incorporating volunteers into lesson delivery, conducting lesson review prior to class, tracking volunteer hours, and building relationships with volunteers that promote their future involvement.

 Assist with the development and implementation of new procedures that promote participant retention

 Promote philanthropy through the YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign

 Ensure the safety of all participants, staff, and property by following The First Tee/YMCA standards/ policies/procedures and ensuring they are maintained amongst all participants, staff, and volunteers

 Maintain a neat, orderly, and clean environment, including all program areas and common spaces

 Remain flexible – willing to learn new skills, alter shifts

 Attend staff meetings, planning sessions and training events as required

 Maintain regular attendance, punctuality and be appropriately dressed and well groomed


 Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C & AED certificate

 Available to work full-time hours for entire contract (no exceptions will be made)

 Experience working with children and families as a coach in a recreational setting

 Some experience with the game of golf, including knowledge of the rules of golf, is an asset

 Demonstrated organizational, administrative, and customer service skills

 Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and multi-task in a high demand environment

 Ability to work independently as well as part of a larger team

 Experience with developing and facilitating community-based programming and services for a wide demographic base an asset

 Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than six (6) months preceding your start date
