The YMCA of Greater Saint John responds to critical social needs in the community and works to provide solutions. By nurturing the potential of children, youth and adults, the YMCA connects people to life-building opportunities, as well as to each other and enhances their quality of life. The YMCA of Greater Saint John offers a diverse set of programs at 12 locations in the city and surrounding municipalities. There are 250 employees and 1,000 volunteers.


The Member Engagement Representative will be working on the Membership team, reporting to the Membership Supervisor. As the representative will most times be the first point of contact for members and visitors, you will have an understanding and knowledge of all programs and services the YMCA of Greater Saint John has to offer.

The Member Engagement Team will provide coverage at all times the Centre is open. This will require you to work a rotating schedule which including opening, closing and weekends.


  • To greet, engage in conversation and provide exceptional Y experiences.
  • Support the Membership Team in providing prospective members with tours – following Y Canada’s 7 Steps of Selling – ASKING prospective members to join in an effort to grow membership.
  • Anticipate customer and welcome desk needs by constantly evaluating environment and guests for cues.
  • Maintains a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events to keep front desk operating to standard and to set a positive example for the shift team.
  • To accurately register members for memberships, programs and orientations.
  • To have knowledge of all programs and services the Y offers, as well as becoming familiar with all departments and staff.
  • Answer the telephone with proper call handling techniques and either answer the questions or transfer the call properly within the organization.
  • To ensure all messages are taken properly and distributed to the right person promptly.
  • To accurately process various types of payments in a timely manner.
  • Assist in completing administrative and communication tasks as directed by the Membership Supervisor.
  • Assist in promotion of programs and services.
  • Maintain a professional work environment through monitoring the ‘Main Street’, adhering to all policies and processes.
  • Role models excellent service delivery following YMCA Best Practices in conjunction with achieving set Key Performance Indicators.
  • To be responsible for the safety and security of members/participants by following YMCA policies and practices.
  • To ensure that all areas are safe, clean and well organized by checking for potential health and safety hazards at all times when on duty and to complete incident report forms when necessary.
  • You will be responsible to record all Member Feedback.
  • To support all HFA departments working efficiently and proactively to ensure excellent delivery of all programs.
  • Complete incident and accident report forms promptly and accurately as required.


  • Act as the Main Point of Contact in the Center if no member of the leadership Team is on location.
  • Immediately respond to any emergency within the building.
  • Models appropriate behaviours in line with the YMCA of Greater Saint John’s mission, vision and values; establishes rapport and maintains effective relationship building behaviour with staff, volunteers and members.
  • Represents the YMCA of Greater Saint John in a professional and confidential manner at ALL times.
  • Understands and integrates the value of philanthropy and volunteerism and imparts this knowledge and beliefs upon staff, volunteers and members.
  • Self manages personal and professional goals set with Supervisor on APR
  • Attend monthly staff meetings, departmental meetings and professional development training as required.


  • Ongoing or completed Bachelor’s Degree, Community College diploma or similar from an accredited institution is considered an asset but not required.
  • Possess a strong work ethic and excellent organization skills.
  • An excellent team player able to share cooperative leadership with other staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Computer experience working with Microsoft Applications.
  • First Aid/CPR.
  • Employment is contingent on having a clean Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search along with clearance from Department of Social Development.

  • As a Member Engagement Representative you are an hourly YMCA of Greater Saint John staff person. Your hours of work and location may be adjusted due to programming needs. There is no guarantee of number of hours worked within a work week.
  • As a YMCA of Greater Saint John staff person you are responsible for your own travel to and from work.
  • The YMCA of Greater Saint John has a Joint Health and Safety Committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss health and safety within the workplace. Questions or concerns about your workplace must be brought forward to committee members.
  • As a Member Engagement Representative you will be required to work in an environment which is often busy with high levels of noise.
  • You are responsible for the member’s safety on a daily basis. You will be required to perform first aid and CPR when and if necessary.
  • This position will require the staff person to stand for periods of times, sit and crouch while engaging with children on their level.
  • You will be responsible to follow and abide by YMCA SAM 2.2 Standards. Ensuring a clean and well maintained centre is required by all staff persons.
