YMCA Calgary opened its doors in 1902; since then we have evolved into a vibrant charitable organization where thousands children, youth and adults access our programs and facilities. We are much more than a gym, pool, and recreational facility – we strive to adapt to community needs, and ensure that our programs and facilities can be accessed by all who need them. YMCA Calgary staff firmly believe that they are creating a positive impact in the community through their work at the Y. In our work we deliver health and wellness programs, community outreach, Aboriginal programs, newcomer programs, day and overnight camping, outdoor schools, leadership development, childcare, and much more.
We serve diverse community needs through the Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA, Crowfoot YMCA, Shawnessy YMCA, South Health Campus YMCA, Community YMCA, Saddletowne YMCA, and Camp Chief Hector YMCA… and we are only just getting started. In partnership with the City of Calgary, we will expand our impact operating new facilities in Quarry Park, Rocky Ridge, and Seton. The YMCA will also be operating a stand-alone childcare centre in Quarry Park to serve 348 children. These amazing new spaces will help us reach more people through our passionate volunteers, members, and staff.

Salary: $90.00/day (room and board included)

Camp Chief Hector YMCA is a unique branch of YMCA Calgary located on a 1, 000 acre site in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Camp programs emphasize community and values-based education, outdoor challenge, fun, individual growth, environmental stewardship, leadership development and service excellence. We provide Summer Camps, Outdoor Schools, weekend programs for adults and families, and meeting/event facilities.

What qualifications are we looking for?
At YMCA Calgary we strive to ensure our employees are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals.
The successful candidate will have the following;
Experience working with children, youth, adults and families
Experience leading a staff team and the ability to confidently mentor staff
In-depth knowledge of program area and enthusiasm for program area activities
Current Paddle Alberta Waterfront or Moving Water Canoe Instructor Certification, or equivalent Paddle Canada Certification
CUI Level 2 Challenge Course Certification, or experience being the lead facilitator at a high ropes course and climbing tower
Pro-Serve Liquor Staff Training and Certification
A driver’s abstract and valid driver’s license
Standard First Aid and CPR Level C or Wilderness First Aid
Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
Three professional references
What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?
Outdoor Programs Weekend Coordinator will:
Provide fun, positive and interactive leadership to clients and staff members
Directly supervise staff giving timely, positive and constructive feedback
Help with and share strategies on dealing with difficult situations – ensuring that program is running safely and effectively at all times
Be flexible, solution-focused and able to problem-solve effectively and creatively
Facilitate program areas, meals and activities for clients of all ages
Create a caring, supportive environment where clients feel that they can take risks, make new friends and try new things
Sincerely believe in the programs and experiences that are offered at Camp Chief Hector YMCA, and do their utmost to ensure that a positive and rewarding experience is had by clients
Demonstrate support for Camp Chief Hector YMCA’s rules, guidelines and values
Manage personal energy to model a strong work ethic each week
Help counsel children and youth when needed
Take on special projects and works to develop and strengthen YMCA programs – Scheduling, staffing and other administrative duties as needed

List your experience working or volunteering with children/youth including the name of the organization, length of sessions, length of your commitment, and details regarding your specific role.
Please highlight backcountry travel experiences with special attention to those that involved leading children/youth.
Your level of First Aid and CPR certification and the expiry date. If you do not have current certification please indicate when you will obtain this.
If you have worked at Camp Chief Hector previously please give an example of growth-orientated feedback that you received from your supervisor, and how you have developed your leadership skills since.
