About the Organization:

The Yáthi Néné Lands and Resource Office works to promote and enhance the environmental, social, cultural and economic health and well-being of the Athabasca Basin Communities (being the Athabasca First Nations communities of Black Lake, Fond du Lac, Hatchet Lake, and the municipalities consisting of Stony Rapids, Wollaston Lake, Uranium City and Camsell Portage) and their residents.

Position Summary:

The Environmental Coordinator will be involved in environmental management, land use planning, regulatory, implementation of the Yáthi Néné Collaboration Agreement, research activities and other duties as assigned. The Coordinator will be an integral member of a small and dynamic team at the Yáthi Néné Land and Resource Office in Fond du Lac. The Coordinator will have strong technical and communication skills with an interest in working with the Athabasca Basin Communities in their traditional territory to advance and protect their Aboriginal and Treaty Rights. This individual will provide support to the Executive Director on achieving the goals of the organization and implementation of the Yáthi Néné Collaboration Agreement.

This Coordinator will require extensive travel to the Athabasca Basin Communities and occasional fieldwork. Health and Safety will be a primary concern for the Coordinator to ensure that safe work practices are foremost.

Principal Duties :

  • Coordinate development and implementation of stakeholder engagement;
  • ‪‪Develop environmental standards and guidelines;
  • ‪‪Participate in technical committees of multi-stakeholder groups, including the Environmental and Cultural Committee;
  • ‪‪Develop processes and timelines for responding to development applications;
  • Coordinate technical team in reviews relating to environmental impact assessments, permitting, and dispositions;
  • Conduct site assessments and data collection in the field;
  • Work with stakeholders and technical team to ensure national and international environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance standards are met;
  • ‪‪Monitor resource development applications to federal and provincial government agencies in the Athabasca Region to ensure proactive management;
  • ‪‪Participate in regular staff and stakeholder meetings;
  • ‪‪Report environmental concerns to regulatory bodies and provincial and federal governments;
  • Assist in information management and control;
  • Work with colleagues to develop and execute research projects;
  • ‪‪Mobilize funds for research projects;
  • Participate in regional based events to promote Yáthi Néné Land and Resource Office goals;
  • ‪‪Actively participate in outreach and networking with other Aboriginal and stakeholder groups; and
  • Engage in other tasks and assignments as directed by the Executive Director.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or post-secondary diploma or certificate in environmental science or resource management, or related experience in combination with post-secondary credentials;
  • ‪‪At least three (3) years’ experience working in similar role;
  • Requires personal vehicle and valid driver’s license;
  • ‪‪Excellent knowledge of traditional environmental values and concerns associated with mineral developments;
  • ‪‪Experience working with First Nations or other Indigenous Communities;
  • ‪‪Experience in program/project research and development;
  • ‪‪Ability to plan programs and manage the budgets effectively;
  • ‪‪Ability to establish and maintain relationships with leaders, industry representatives and community members;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills;
  • ‪‪Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite and data entry;
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and asset;
  • ‪‪Excellent project management, problem solving and decision-making skills; and
  • ‪‪Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, solve complex problems, and meet deadlines.
