Completion of Grade XII.
Completion of Health Unit Clerk Course or equivalent experience required.
Completion of a Health Care Aide course required.
Demonstrates abilities in word processing, setting up spreadsheets, and databases.
Working knowledge of psychiatric medical terminology.
Demonstrated ability to effectively:

retain information on a confidential basis
organize workload effectively
work interdependently and independently showing initiative at all times
Excellent physical and mental health required and must successfully complete physical examination to ensure good physical health.
Excellent and professional deportment.
Considerable strength for assisting with management of aggressive patients, restraining, and lifting patient in Code 65/66 situations on NU6.
Current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation certificate required.
Non-violent crisis training or equivalent required.
Ability to complete the position on a regular basis.
The unit clerical assistant position functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team and is responsible to the Program Manager – Mental Health. The primary functions are related to communications/clerical support, and under the direction of the RN/RPN provides support in the physical restraining of patients and participates in Code 65/66’s, as well as supportive patient care (ie. Lifts and hygiene care).
Responds to and assists with Code 65/66, and assists in restraining of disruptive patients on the unit.
Demonstrates ability to provide continuous quality services.
Assists with patient hygiene/bathing/dressing as required.
Assists with heavy moving and lifting of patients.
Assists with patient observation rounds as directed by unit nurses.
Collects soiled supplies.
Maintains confidentiality and professional conduct in all matters pertaining to hospital, patients, families, and staff members.
Accepts and works within the framework of the Hospital’s philosophy, objectives and policies.
Facilitates communication both written and verbal intra and interdepartmentally.
Maintains records and reports.
Facilitates good public relations intra and interdepartmentally.
Orders supplies as required or requested.
Initiates requisitions as necessary or as requested.
Operates communication equipment in the area.
Maintains effective working relationships with and within the unit through interaction with staff, physicians, patients, visitors, etc.
Meets own learning needs through self-improvement individual study, inservices, and staff meetings.
Adheres to all safety and health regulations and demonstrates safe work practices.
Other related duties as assigned.
