QUALIFICATIONS :
Education :
Must be registered on the practicing roster of the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba.

Experience :
Recent and relevant clinical experience preferred.

Other :
Member, Canadian Physiotherapy Association preferred.

Ability to effectively:
read, write legibly, follow oral and written instructions

relate on an interpersonal basis with others

perform standard operating procedures relative to the position

Willingness to share and learn from others.

Physical and mental health to meet the requirements of the position.

Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support required.

May include work within the South Winnipeg Integrated Health and Social Services Geographic Area.

RESPONSIBILITIES :
Under the general supervision of the Charge Physiotherapistand upon referral from a medical or dental practitioner, the Staff Physiotherapist is responsible for:

Adheres to all safety and health regulations and demonstrates safe work practices.

PATIENT TREATMENT :
Performs patient assessment and reassessment to determine the suitability of a patient for physiotherapy treatment in accordance with established standards of care.

Based on assessment results, sets treatment goals, plans an appropriate course of treatment and modifies this based on reassessment. This may include pre-discharge assessments in the community.

Implements and modifies, as necessary, treatment programs. this is dependent upon knowledge and professional updating of the following information:

anatomy and physiology of normal and abnormal states

treatment modalities

therapeutic effects of all treatment utilized

ability to interpret results of treatment

contraindications related to modalities and treatment

Responsible for patient and personal safety during physiotherapeutic care; knows emergency procedures (fire, accident and cardiac arrest) and acts on them when necessary.

Participates in the development, implementation monitoring and evaluation of standards of patient care and other quality assurance tools related to the physiotherapy service.

Determines priority patients requiring physiotherapy treatment on weekends and holidays.

Documents patients’ assessment, progress, treatment, attendance and discharge as per department policy.

Organizes, priorizes and assumes responsibility for his/her caseload.

Instructs support personnel in the carrying out of patient-related duties and is responsible for supervising delegated activities.

EDUCATION :
Develops and teaches programs directed towards preventative and restorative health care.

Teaches the patient and the family treatment plans, and important aspects of rehabilitative care; teaches and reinforces patient self-management.

Responsible for teaching and providing supervision for physiotherapy students, interns and re-entry candidates. Evaluates their performance and makes the decision on pass/fail status in the clinical experience.

Teaches nursing and other students the practical and theoretical aspects of rehabilitation and may be involved in their evaluation as required.

Teaches peers and other health care staff topics related to rehabilitation through formal and informal means.

Updates professional skills and knowledge base to maintain continuing competence.

Develops and participates in clinical studies as required.

Advises physicians; advises and instructs nurses appropriate patient care related to rehabilitation.
