COMMUNITY ACTION & ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMMER

NorWest Co-op Community Health is looking for a Community Action and Engagement Programmer for the NorWest Community Food Centre project. The NorWest Community Food Centre is a new initiative which offers a shared meal program, cooking, gardening and advocacy programs that improve access to healthy food in a way that maintains dignity and builds community. We ask that applicants share our commitment to community development, food security and social justice.
The Community Action and Engagement Programmer will be responsible for coordinating a community action training program for community members and for supporting a team of peer advocates who provide information, referrals and advocacy to community members at the Community Food Centre. The candidate will provide leadership and coordination for the advocates including scheduling, honorariums, meeting facilitation, ongoing educational/training opportunities, support and connection to neighbourhood resources and networks. The Programmer will work with the advocates to identify areas for strategic action including the development of campaigns and initiatives to address poverty and social injustice in the community. The candidate will network and build connections with other agencies to support both community and systemic work of the Community Food Centre.
The Community Action and Engagement Programmer will support student placements and volunteers at the Food Centre site including volunteers, program participants, vulnerable adults, seniors, and youth. The candidate will possess a mixture of community development and community organising experience, as well as an in-depth knowledge of social services, community programs and resources.
-Post-secondary degree in a related field of study
-Supportive counselling experience and education an asset
-Knowledge of Indigenous languages and cultures an asset
-Proven experience in utilizing a successful volunteer program
-3 years of experience with program development, group facilitation, community outreach and community organizing
-Excellent knowledge of systems with which low-income people interact including EIA, subsidized housing, legal aid and benefit programs.
-Demonstrated ability to move people from knowledge to action; ability to inspire, teach and empower community members to engage in positive change
-Demonstrated ability to work with and show sensitivity to those who experience poverty/discrimination; demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities
-Commitment to social justice, knowledge of food system and poverty issues
-Experience with supporting food and cooking related programs
Salary range $21.522-$25.449/hour and benefits as per CUPE
