Westbank First Nation is comprised of five reserves totalling 5,306 acres. Tsinstikeptum Reserves 9 and 10 border Okanagan Lake and are in close proximity to the City of Kelowna, one of the fastest growing cities in British Columbia.

Approximately 45% of WFN lands are developed and are fully serviced with cable, water, sewer and other utilities. The remaining reserves are very desirable for future economic growth as the area responds to increasing demands for development. Westbank First Nation has implemented one of the most comprehensive sets of community laws in Canada that cover the development and regulation of reserve lands. All persons residing or conducting business on reserve are subject to Westbank First Nation Laws.

Through its administration, Westbank First Nation provides a number of community services including: daycare and pre-school services at Westbank Child Development Centre, a JK to grade 6 school located within the Sensisyusten Community Centre, and a 63 bed intermediate care facility in Pine Acres Home.

About the Opportunity Currently, Westbank First Nation is seeking an experienced part time Bus Driver in Kelowna, BC to transport passengers over specified routes to local or distant locations following set time schedules. At minimum, you will be guaranteed at least 12 hours per week.

This part-time position is a great way to experience all WFN has to offer and gain valuable skills. This part-time position may provide the opportunity to grow in the organization and may progress into full-time employment.

As you abide by all relevant legislation, policies, and procedures, your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Safely driving students to and from school, following a prescribed route, on a daily basis, with consistent pick up/drop off times, as well as on any school field trips;
  • Transporting passengers involved in other community programs during non-school times, which include, but not limited to Spring Break, Winter Break, and July/August months;
  • Performing daily safety and maintenance checks and documenting any maintenance concerns to the Principal of Sensisyusten School;
  • Maintaining a clean, presentable bus, including full interior/exterior washes, oil changes, and tire rotation/replacement/change over as needed;
  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections
  • Enforcing bus safety rules and regulations, and maintaining order and proper discipline of students (may include resolving disputes, documenting and reporting on severe disciplinary actions);
  • Ensures children’s safety when boarding and leaving the bus and crossing the street while the bus is stopped;
  • Attends meetings, programs, and in-service training as assigned

In order to qualify for the role, you will need the following:

  • Provincial Grade 12 or equivalent preferred;
  • Valid BC Class 1 or 2 Driver’s License with air endorsements;
  • Valid First Aid Certification with CPR Level B or C endorsement;
  • Must possess extensive knowledge of traffic rules and regulations, school bus operation requirements, and National Safety Code Standards;
  • Able to pass a satisfactory Criminal Records Check and vulnerable Sector Search; and
  • 2 – 3 years’ experience driving a School Bus.

In addition, it would be considered an asset if you have:

  • Conflict Resolution/Stress Management Certificate preferred; and
  • 2 – 3 years’ experience in the light maintenance of a School Bus preferred.

You would be an excellent fit for the role if you have superior interpersonal and people skills, and are sensitive to the interrelationship of passengers, parents and caregivers.

Since this is a part time position, you must be able to work flexible hours and with limited supervision. Because you will be supporting our current part-time bus driver, we are looking for someone that is open to on-call shifts in order to pick up the vacation/sick leave for the other driver

We are searching for an individual with integrity and a demonstrated ability to maintain discipline with school-aged children while maintaining composure and control. Since safety is our top priority, you must be able to effectively handle emergency situations.
