The Pharmacy Assistant assists the Pharmacist in the technical aspects of prescription filling and administrative duties in order to increase the Pharmacist’s opportunity to provide patient care. The Pharmacy Assistant is expected to participate in all aspects of Pharmacy Operations required of a team player. They are a key member in the delivery of superior customer service.

Position Responsibilities

Maintain patient confidentiality and follow all practices consistent with the Privacy Act. A) Receiving prescriptions from patients Following provincial legal/regulatory conditions Assessing the prescription for completeness i.e. Name; Address; DOB; Allergies; 3rd Party Information; Any Special Requests; Prescriber; Generic/Brand; Prioritizing Prescriptions with 21st Century Guidelines B) Performing Computer Functions as directed by the Pharmacist i.e. Data Entry; Price Check; Patient Information Entry/Update; Competent interpretation and processing of written prescriptions including Latin abbreviations, drug name recognition, dosage calculations; Refills; Report Generation; Patient Profile checks C) Filling prescriptions (always under the Pharmacist’s supervision) Selecting appropriate products Performing the accuracy program, including 7 point, Visual and DIN checks Selecting and counting/ measuring & preparing appropriate products Labeling and organizing for pharmacist checking Gaining necessary approvals for verbal refills where authorized Employing ‘STOP’ forms if applicable Facilitating all aspects of Cognitive Services D) Maintaining Inventory Control Assisting Pharmacist in maintaining appropriate stock levels of drugs and supplies Checking for and pulling expired medications at least monthly Cleaning up Will Call Bin of ‘stale’ prescriptions on a regular basis Writing up returns Ordering of drugs and supplies Using preferred wholesaler for Pharmacy purchases as much as possible i.e. Kohl and Frisch Operating of the Telxon gun Checking off, pricing and putting away pharmacy orders Zoning the pharmacy shelves ‘X- ing’ bottles when opened Interchangeable drug knowledge and appropriate maintenance/selection of key brands/preferred generics E) General Housekeeping Stocking Prescription filling supplies (Vials, labels, bags) Keeping the dispensary clean, organized and neat Maintaining clean/safe work environment as part of the team approach (i.e. dishes, garbage) Maintaining & cleaning packaging & dispensing equipment, computer, fax machine, etc. F) Clerical Organization Filing prescriptions, invoices, reports, correspondence and memos Completing any administrative support functions assigned (i.e. journals, accounts receivable, Aged Trial Balance) G) Assisting with OTC Operations Ordering, stocking, cashier duties as assigned by OTC Manager and/or Pharmacist Provides excellent Customer Service by: Practicing the 3 Metre Rule. Answering Customer calls promptly. Assist Customers in finding merchandise. Retrieving Customers prescriptions from the ‘will call bin’ Showing a high sense of urgency with all assignments. Following proper procedures for handling claims merchandise. Operates register when needed. Providing assistance to front end Associates with price checks. Maintains a properly merchandised department through: Maintain inventory levels. Zoning the department. Ensuring the merchandise is properly signed and priced. Maintain features. Following proper procedures for ordering. Practices safe work habits by: Following all safety and emergency policies and procedures. Cleaning up all spills quickly. Keeping the floor clear of all objects. Properly using all ladders and ensuring they are not left on the sales floor. Following proper lifting techniques. Ensuring all displays are secured in a safe and proper manner. Ensuring Occupational Health and Safety Act guidelines are being followed properly. Ensuring stable stacking of merchandise. Using back support belt when necessary. Being knowledgeable about emergency and safety procedures.

Qualifications

Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Calibration of equipment used in the prescription filling process Reconstitution of powdered and other forms of medications Basic Reading/Writing Skills Ability to understand the meaning of written or printed matter and to record information. Ability to read prescriptions (Doctor’s handwriting). Communication Skills Ability to communicate effectively to maximize accuracy in the delivery of patient care.

Licensing & Other Qualifications

A Pharmacy Assistant Certificate and/or experience is a recommended prerequisite for new hires. The Associate must complete all Wal-Mart Basic and Advanced Training Modules and classes.

The Associate will be involved in frequent repetitive hand actions (i.e. typing). The Associate will be required to have sufficient co-ordination (i.e. placing and screwing in a small washer on a bolt, picking up a paper clip, etc.).
