Responsible to initiate, design and drive all company health & safety policies and procedures, ensuring the integration of health & safety requirements into standard operating practices, job requirements, and operational expectations. Works with internal departments to drive proactive approach to safety, ensuring compliance with all occupational health & safety legislation and that company initiatives and programs support a safe shopping experience for customers and a safe and healthy working environment for associates.

Position Responsibilities
• Initiates and develops compliance policies, standard operational procedures and assessments to ensure adherence to occupational health & safety laws and to provide a safe shopping experience for customers and a safety and healthy working environment for associates in Stores and Home Office (Electrical Safety, MSDS, First Aid Training, Powered equipment Training)
• Participates in the review of standard operating practice documentation created by Central Operations, Ecommerce, Logistics, Fleet and Aviation to ensure designed in health & safety compliance
• Collaboration with construction and design team working groups to ensure “Right Start” for new or renovated stores and distribution centres to ensure designed in health & safety compliance
• Review of Construction Safety consultant reports and appropriate remediation and escalation
• Collaboration and oversight of specialty operations (TLE, Photo Lab, Vision & Pharmacy) to drive proactive approach to Health & Safety and compliance
• Monitors developments in occupational health & safety legislation to assess business impact and response, anticipating and developing strategies & programs
• Supports internal business units by identifying gaps and implementing changes to current policies, procedures and programs to address issues and ensure compliance
• Designs & implements occupational health & safety audits and assessments to be completed by Compliance Continuous Improvement Team and internal assessments to be complete by store operations (Canstar, Continuous Improvement Reviews, Compliance Manager Audits, overnight audits)
• Provides periodic training to various business units within the company to maintain a high level of awareness to safety and compliance requirements
• Articulates corporate positions on compliance matters to regulators and external agencies
• Actively participates on Health & Safety industry groups ( RWOAC & RHSAT, RCC)
• Ensures that health & safety compliance programs, policies, procedures and reporting are consistent with global direction and leverage global talent
• Collaboration with the Workers Compensation team to identify enterprise trends thus altering programs, processes to bridge any gaps
• HMDSS annual inspection and training programs
• Oversight on mould and/or asbestos remediation
• Monitoring of monthly (quarterly) asbestos monitoring reports
• Oversight of Home Office Safety team
• Participation in EMEA & International working groups related to health & safety initiatives
• Participate in annual risk assessment process
• Collaborate with Training and Communications team and systems and Analytics
Qualifications
Minimum College Certificate/Diploma Required
Minimum 6-8 years of Experience Required
– Subject matter expertise in occupational health & safety legislation. Exceptional communication and influence skills, as position is required to partner with stakeholders across the business to ensure Health & Safety objectives are reflected in all strategic priorities.
-Heath and Safety related certifications – e.g. Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP). Education listed above must be in specific Environmental or Health & Safety program management.
