Job Summary
Reporting to the District Executive Director, this position is responsible for providing professional and practice leadership, and ensuring the provision of safe and effective quality client care. The Nursing Manager directs and monitors the delivery of client care services, staff training programs, and supervision of all front line staff and team operations. The Nursing Manager will work within a continuous quality improvement framework which reflects the Mission, Values and Philosophy of VON.

Client Focus – Client Service Delivery

  • Directs and monitors delivery of client care services and day to day functions of front line staff in accordance with current regulatory guidelines and VON policies, procedures and standards;
  • Receives and documents all employee, family, and client complaints/issues related to front line service delivery. Collaborates with other management personnel in preparation and execution of resolution plan, as required;
  • Fosters a client centered environment with a focus on quality improvement, safety and risk management for clients, staff and volunteers. Ensures exceptional client care;

Leading Self and People

  • Supervision and performance management of front line service providers;
  • Provides training and education for advanced skills;
  • Facilitates staff development and growth through competency assessments, Performance Development Plans (PDPs), individualized learning plans, referral to practice educators, and on-going mentorship;
  • Ensures occupational health and safety policies, programs and activities are performed by all front line staff in compliance with VON Canada Health and Safety policies and guidelines and the Occupational Health and Safety Act;

Interactive Communications

  • Regularly liaises/communicates proactively and constructively with various members of the following teams:

Provincial Management team
Local and District teams
VON clinical management team
Functional teams

  • External Relationships: As assigned by District Executive Director, may include but not limited to:

Client Organizations, Regional Health Authorities, Ministries of Health/Social Services
Community Health, Social and Service Agencies

  • May participate on local, regional or national team or committees as required, desired or requested. Examples include: Quality Care and Service, Joint Occupational Health and Safety, Accreditation, Talent Acquisition;
  • Participates on the on-call rotation;

Financial Management

  • Participates with annual budget preparation, performance management and measurement reports;
  • Monitors performance against budget and ensures that corrective action is taken in a timely manner to remain within budget;

Systems Transformation – Organization Leadership/Business Program and Community

  • Provides front line personnel with access to clinical advice, support and clinical reference resources;
  • Regularly monitors performance related to funder expectations and contributes to the development and implementation of quality improvement activities to achieve performance targets;
  • Monitors and reports on performance against Provincial and Site /program balanced scorecard(s) and established quality and performance metrics;


  • Post secondary education in Nursing, with demonstration to lifelong learning;
  • Current registration with College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) in good standing;
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in leading staff in a home support environment including but not limited to: facility with information and communication technology and practices, budget management, decision making, coaching, negotiation, and program or project management;
  • Ability to exercise innovation and initiative in solving problems and identifying opportunities including living LEAN and practicing LEAN principles and methodologies;
  • Familiarity with the quality management approach, and committed to providing exceptional customer service;
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership, home support, team building, communication and education;
  • Embraces and facilitates culture of teamwork and change management;
  • Self-directed and creative, demonstrated initiative, sound judgment and integrity;
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Successful completion of VON defined education and training required to be fully competent in the role;
  • Must have personal vehicle and possess both a current driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance;
  • Current criminal background check will be requested;
