COMMUNITY SCHOOL TEAM (CST) PROGRAMMER

An exciting opportunity to support vulnerable elementary students after school with the Vancouver Board of Education

Our large, urban and multicultural school district provides programs to over 50,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and over 2,000 adults in adult education programs. Serving our diverse district in 110 facility sites, our programs and services are designed to address both complex challenges and extraordinary opportunities.

Job Description:

You will support after-school programs at Queen Alexandra Elementary School by:

  • Corresponding with partner organizations to ensure successful program delivery
  • Referring children to suitable programs and assisting with program registration
  • Liaising with parents and caregivers to assist children’s participation in programs
  • Supervising children before and after programs, and during program times for children who are not able to participate in a program on a given day
  • Providing snacks to children
  • Providing first aid
  • Liaising with school, partner organizations, and CST staff to ensure quality of programs
  • Collecting and reporting program data
  • Gathering feedback from student participants, community partners, and parents
  • Contacting parents/caregivers regarding student absences, or late pick-ups

Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in any of the following areas: Child and Youth Care, Recreation Leadership, Human Kinetics, Community Development, Social Work or Social Sciences, Education, and/or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 1 year experience working with vulnerable children in a recreational setting
  • Current first aid and CPR certification or willing to obtain
  • HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development and/or QUEST2 certification or willing to obtain
  • Excellent communication skills including clarity, patience, and respect
  • Experience in working with school staff and volunteers
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Experience liaising with community organizations
  • Arts interest is an asset

Hours:

Hours may vary from week to week, and are approximately 20 hours per week for 35 weeks of the school year. Work will be primarily in the afternoons – applicants must be available to work afternoons until 6:00pm, as well as possible weekend or evening work. This position offers an hourly wage of $18.50 (+ 10.67% in lieu of benefits). Start date is October 3, 2016 pending successful completion of a criminal records check and an online safety course.
