Hiring: Temporary Full-Time Position (37.5 hours per week)
Duration: 4 Months (with the potential for extension)
Start Date: August 15, 2018 (or September 1, 2018)

About the Vancouver Economic Commission (VEC)

The Vancouver Economic Commission is the economic development agency of the City of Vancouver, dedicated to supporting innovative, creative and sustainable business in Vancouver. More specifically, the VEC:

  • Conducts unique research on key business sectors, clusters, and challenges in the city and the region;
  • Develops and implements projects and programs to support entrepreneurship, business transformation and growth, including foreign direct investment & attraction; and
  • Crafts and shares Vancouver’s economic narratives and business brand both locally and abroad.

Skills & Requirements

The ideal candidate will have most or all of the following credentials, skills or qualities:

  • Post-secondary education in a related field such as communications, marketing, public relations, or professional writing, OR an equivalent combination of work experience, including writing in a professional context, doing social media in a business context, and/or developing professional presentations
  • Exemplary written and oral English (including writing for the web, social media and blogs)
  • An understanding of basic design, color and typography principles
  • Be outgoing, helpful, with the ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines at one time
  • Prior experience creating content using social media tools and online publishing platforms, including WordPress
  • Demonstrable experience with the Adobe Creative Suite for print and digital applications
  • Capable of occasional light physical work, including moving chairs, tables and banners for event setup
  • Demonstrable interest in Vancouver’s local economy an asset (but not a requirement)
  • Photography and videography skills an asset (but not a requirement)

Duties & Responsibilities

The Digital Communications Assistant will primarily work with VEC’s Marketing & Branding Coordinator and Communications Specialist in the execution of daily and ad hoc communications tasks, including the following:

  • Social Media Management – help curate and share important information about Vancouver’s innovative and green businesses and industry sectors across VEC social media channels
  • Blog Contribution – contribute to web content about businesses that are leading Vancouver’s transition to a low carbon economy, key VEC programs and announcements, and research updates
  • Production Calendar Maintenance – ensure the VEC production calendar is up to date and populated with deliverables and timelines in the production queue
  • Event Activation – assist with event setup, facilitation, and teardown (e.g. for community events, workshops and roundtables for Vancouver businesses)
  • Event Promotion – assist in the creation of promotional materials including but not limited to social media packages, event listings, basic email campaigns, and on-site branding materials
  • Presentation Development – assist VEC staff in developing on-brand messaging and visual tools for presentations
  • Stakeholder Engagement – assist in developing and distributing short surveys, and designing and executing other VEC audience engagement tactics (e.g. social media contests, pledges, etc.)
  • Brand Monitoring – ensure that the VEC look & feel is properly executed on any outgoing materials
  • Design Support – work with existing VEC visual assets and design templates to create tailored content for key VEC audiences, including information packages, invitations, email campaigns and event pages
  • Photography & Videography – take photos and videos where needed to accompany content being developed for web, print, and social media

SALARY: $20.00 – $24.00 per hour, commensurate with experience (37.5 hours per week).
