The Exhibit Technician contributes to a high standard for the visual presentation and functionality of the Vancouver Aquarium’s graphic and non-living exhibit components, helping to deliver an engaging and high quality visitor experience. They ensure all
exhibit signage is current and supports the development and maintenance of new and existing exhibits. The Exhibit Technician also assists with painting services as needed related to the construction, alteration and maintenance of Aquarium buildings, grounds
and equipment.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Enhances the educational experience of the Aquarium’s visitors through signage and interpretation by:

Producing all printed and vinyl based graphics and signs (including animal labels) required through the Aquarium (either by doing the design itself, or producing the design work of a more senior designer);

Professionally installing required signage in a safe and secure manner;
Maintaining vinyl cutter and plotter equipment and supplies, including periodic trouble shooting and software updates, maintenance of consumable stocks, and coordination with service technicians.

Supports the development and maintenance of new and existing exhibits by:

Creating three dimensional exhibits including sourcing of unique tools, products and processes; fabrication, assembly and installation of various mechanical and electromechanical components; building design models and prototypes; installing props, models,
specimens and artifacts;
Inspecting galleries, exhibits and public spaces to locate deficiencies and safety concerns, and effecting repairs. Issuing requests and work orders to be completed by other departments;

Directing and coordinating with exhibit contractors, when required, to install and maintain exhibits and graphics;

Setting and maintaining gallery exhibit lighting for functionality and enhancement of exhibit effect, including aim and focusing, relamping, and sourcing new fixtures and lamps when required;

Managing the inventory of exhibit elements in on- and off-site storage, and coordinating delivery and retrieval of materials from storage;

Supports the building and construction team with the highest standards of painting quality and maintenance of the Aquarium’s projects, construction, alterations, and overall professional appearance by:

Performing painting duties throughout the Aquarium as required;
Ensuring storage of paint products in a safe manner and disposing of any old products according to applicable regulations.

Promptly aiding in emergency protocol;
Maintaining and supporting organizational safety standards;
Continually improving our impact on the environment and greening of operations by supporting our Environmental Management Systems (EMS) protocols;

Performing additional duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Minimum of 2 years practical/relevant experience in exhibit maintenance and graphic production required;

Professional painting experience an asset;
Completion of a post-secondary diploma in a relevant trade qualification preferred;

Experience working with shop tools and related equipment in a safe manner;
Experience in signage production and safe operation of a vinyl cutting equipment and large format plotters;

WHMIS certification required (training provided as needed);
Experience in Graphic and / or Industrial Design.
Experience and knowledge of Latex, Oil Based, Acrylic, and Epoxy paints is an asset.

Skills

Proficient with Macintosh and/or PC platforms as well as MS Office;
Proficient in Adobe Suite;
Light fabrication (wood, plastics, metal) for exhibit fabrication, assembly and repairs with woodworking hand tools, drill presses, etc;

Scissor lift operation (training provided);
Proficiency with simple electrical, electromechanical, and plumbing systems an asset;

Ability to creatively problem solve;
Good time management skills;
Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment with minimal supervision;

Must possess good communication skills and customer service skills;
Must be flexible in dealing with changing priorities.

Working Conditions:
Incumbent must be able to safely lift and move a variety of objects (up to 30 lbs.) on a regular basis, including large awkward objects;

Job requires employee to safely perform tasks involving bending, reaching and stretching in order to prepare, set-up and execute various tasks, including working in high places with scissor lift and ladders;

Exposure to saws, drills, and sharp implements;
Exposure to solvents and similar materials (appropriate Personal Protective Equipment and training provided);

Work environment is a mix of shared office environment with the usual ergonomic risks, shop area, and public spaces.
