About Us

The Communications & Marketing Team within the Schulich School of Medicine &
Dentistry has a mission to protect, promote, and enhance the reputation of the
School locally, nationally, and internationally.

This is achieved through the development of strategic communications plans including print and online publications and communications vehicles, social media, strategic marketing and branding, events and promotional activities, media relations, and the implementation of key strategies which engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, and donors.

A secondary mission is to strategically plan, develop, implement, promote, and
manage the flow of internal communication and information while strengthening the
internal culture of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. It is through doing so that a greater
sense of pride and belonging will be enhanced for all facets of the School and its
various components through strategic communication initiatives and vehicles.


The Special Events Officer strategically plans, implements and manages three
categories of events: community focused promotional events; faculty specific premiere
events, and faculty-specific development events which are intended to raise funds,
facilitate fundraising, and/or engage alumni of Schulich Medicine & Dentistry. The events
are all critical to the mission and achievement of the School’s vision, as well as Strategic
Plan goals and fundraising campaign goals.

The incumbent is responsible for successfully securing sponsorship for the School’s
premiere events including the Dean’s Homecoming Gala, the Leaders in Innovation
Dinner and the London Research Day. In doing so, the incumbent will liaise with
Western’s Development Team to ensure all processes (e.g. prospect coordination,
database updates, etc.) for sponsorship are closely followed.


– Undergraduate University Degree, Arts, Humanities or Marketing
– A Post-Graduate Degree in Public Relations and/or Marketing is preferred

– 5 years’ experience in program or event planning, marketing, public relations
– Experience with sponsorship planning, requests and management
– 3 years’ experience in alumni relations or development is preferred
– Experience working in an academic and/or health care environment is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
– Excellent verbal communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels of an
– Ability to plan and manage events of various sizes
– Demonstrated ability in volunteer management
– Advanced computer skills including web-based tools (social media and Cascade)
and Microsoft Office
– Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve
department goals
– Influential interpersonal skills and knowledge of approaches and techniques for
working with individuals and groups in a respectful, constructive and collaborative
manner at all levels of the organization
– Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce
high quality work while meeting deadlines
– Ability to establish and build healthy working relationships and partnerships with
clients, peers, and internal and external stakeholders
– Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
– Demonstrated ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily
– Ability to understand customer needs and expectations and provide excellent
customer service directly and indirectly to satisfy expectations
– Proven ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize with an eye to consistently
producing high-quality work and meeting deadlines in a demanding environment
– A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution
and people management skills
– Flexibility to work outside of regular business hours and travel on occasion
