Science Technology Services (STS) emerged from the former IT staff of the Department of Computer Science and strives to provide high-quality IT support, services, and infrastructure to faculty, staff, and students in the Faculty of Science. We specialize in general technical support, desktop support, server infrastructure, cloud technologies, and software development, among other areas.

Responsibilities

The IT Support Technician will complete small software development and systems administration projects to assist in improving, monitoring, and maintaining Computer Science departmental IT infrastructure. Examples of potential projects include:

  • Developing, testing, and securing REST APIs for internal databases
  • Installing and configuring OpenStack Tempest to help in validating the Department’s OpenStack cloud each time it is upgraded
  • Assisting in migrating departmental IT infrastructure to a new data centre, providing assistance with racking, cabling, and testing servers
  • Completing an inventory of all departmental IT infrastructure and assisting in renumbering of network-connected equipment.

The responsibilities of this position will support the Department of Computer Science, but the incumbent will report to and take guidance from the Manager of Science Technology Services (STS). He/she will work productively and courteously with members of STS and other members of the Western community.

Qualifications

Education:
– Must be a Computer Science or Engineering student returning to full-time studies in September 2018

Experience:

  • Comfort in picking up new programming languages and frameworks, and quickly becoming productive with them
  • Experience and comfort working at the Linux command line is preferred
  • Experience developing software in C# and ASP.NET Core is preferred
  • Experience with Docker is preferred

  • Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements as applicable

Key Accountabilities

  • The incumbent will assist with software development, as directed and supervised by the Manager of Science Technology Services
  • The incumbent will assist with server and desktop computer installation and removal (will involve lifting)
  • The incumbent will assist in maintenance tasks, such as installing, updating, and configuring software, installing patches and updates, and helping to monitor the uptime and performance of existing systems
  • The incumbent will assist in inventorying departmental servers, desktops, printers, and other network-connected devices

Hours of work

  • These will be determined in consultation with the Manager of Science Technology Services (30 to 40 hours per week), and will be scheduled during our regular business hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
