About Us

The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry provides outstanding education within a research-intensive, distributed learning environment, where tomorrow’s physicians, dentists and health researchers and other scholars learn to be socially responsible leaders in the advancement of human health. The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is the largest Faculty on the Western University campus and employs over 2,000 part-time and full-time faculty members and over 1,500 staff.


Reporting to the Manager of Administration and Finance of the Department of Medicine, the Financial Assistant supports the Department of Medicine by providing accurate, detailed and timely completion of many financial and administrative tasks using sound judgement, and applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and related experience. The incumbent has an in-depth understanding of the complexities of faculty and financial issues that challenge the Department of Medicine, as well as the ability to assist with on-going and constant changes as required.


  • 3 Year College Diploma in Accounting
  • Eligibility for/currently enrolled in CPA PREP or PEP Program
  • 2 years in financial services
  • Experience with OHIP and billing software packages and applications
  • Experience providing client service support for the OHIP billing systems
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and demonstrated financial accounting experience
  • Ability to process information with a high level of accuracy
  • Intermediate understanding of financial statements
  • Proven customer support on busy help desk to handle enquiries and resolve issues in a timely manner
  • Ability to establish effective routines with all members of the team to maximize productivity
  • Proven ability and natural inclination to interact with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
  • Self-motivated multi-tasker with strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate Department events and activities
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative and follow through on work assignments to ensure exceptional quality
  • Ability to travel to other hospital sites in the city (ie. University Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Care, Parkwood)
  • Positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
  • Creative problem-solving skills and sound professional judgment, especially regarding confidential/sensitive matters
  • Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to growth and change
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office and databases
  • Possesses a reputation for resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with internal and external clients at all levels of management
  • Ability to attend occasional meetings outside of regular office hours and/or travel across the city to other hospital sites as required
