About Us

Social Science Technology Services (SSTS) serves the technology needs of the faculty, staff and students in the Faculty of Social Science, at Western University. We are located on the first floor of the Social Science Centre. Due to the diversity of Social Science, our clients are based in several locations, both on and off campus. We are committed to delivering the best technology services and support to our faculty, staff and students.

Responsibilities

The Computer Assistant will provide higher level support in the areas of administrative services, research services, infrastructure services, or student services. The incumbent will have responsibility for carrying out activities which require some specialization of skills. The incumbent will be responsible for providing support to faculty or staff, and for effectively carrying out a variety of tasks in accordance with policies, procedures, and instructions received from their supervisor. The incumbent will take guidance from their supervisor, and work productively and courteously with their work team and other members of the Western community.

Qualifications

Education:
– Must be a Computer Science or Engineering student returning to full-time studies in September 2018.

Experience:
– Experience working in JavaScript, PHP and Perl programming would be preferred.

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
– Written and verbal communication skills to express ideas clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
– Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
– Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule
– Ability to follow processes and practices with high attention to detail
– Demonstrates integrity and works in accordance with Western’s policies and procedures
– Ability to multi-task and maintain an organized work environment
– Computer skills with Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn and use new software programs as required
– Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
– Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
– Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements as applicable

Key Accountabilities:
a) The incumbent will assist with computer programming tasks as directed and supervised by a programmer/analyst.
b) The incumbent will assist with computer installations and removals (will involve lifting).
c) The incumbent will assist with various computer hardware tasks, including some electronics work. Most hardware related tasks will be assisting a fully qualified computer hardware technician.
d) There will also be software tasks such as updating or installing software, running Windows Updates and related duties.
e) There will be some office duties, such as covering front desk inquiries, answering phones, and other duties as necessary.

Hours of work: These will be determined in consultation with the department manager (24 to 35 hours per week), and will be scheduled during our regular business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
