Description

:

Under the direction of the Manager, Infrastructure, the Supervisor, Systems Administrator is responsible for the operation of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) core hardware infrastructure that consists of: a data center critical to the Faculty’s academic mission; the entire FAS systems architecture; data backup solution; and a high-end virtualization and data storage service that is a pillar of FAS’s business continuity and disaster recovery plans. The incumbent manages and oversees all functions related to the Faculty-wide system architecture and is responsible for strategic and operational planning with regard to the optimum operation of FAS hardware infrastructure, virtualized platform and data storage and backup solutions.

The incumbent participates in the development of strategic and tactical plans, evaluates project proposals, develops departmental expectations and standards, and recommends changes to improve service delivery. He/she advises on the applicability of new technologies and developments that may aid in increasing the productivity and efficiency of Faculty computing services and resources. The incumbent provides high level and in-detail IT systems infrastructure plans as required by Faculty renovation and Faculty capital projects.

The incumbent provides leadership in identifying new opportunities for service expansion and improvement. The incumbent directs and supervises a team of System Administrators. The incumbent’s duties include providing training, assigning and reviewing work, monitoring performance, providing feedback and technical guidance.

The incumbent also manages the daily operation, support, maintenance, and security of FAS core IT systems infrastructure. The main duties include: core IT infrastructure planning and management; performance optimization of core Faculty servers; virtualization infrastructure and central storage; deployment and management of identity solutions with optimum security and performance characteristics as per service requirements, policies, standards, and guidelines; planning and provision of server and storage resources in support of various academic and administrative initiatives. The incumbent is responsible for identifying key performance indicators for his/her area of responsibility. He/she plans, directs and implements upgrades to central computing resources and advises on the applicability of new technologies and developments that may aid in increasing the productivity and efficiency of Faculty IT services and resources.

The incumbent represents FAS on relevant University committees and task forces as required, and is responsible for financial and contract management related to his/her area of responsibilities. Therefore the incumbent prepares the project budget for Faculty of Arts Science systems and data storage operation and tracks operational and project budget expenses and revenue activities.

Qualifications

:

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience. CISSP certification required. PMP, TOGAF, or ITIL certifications would be considered assets.

Experience: A minimum of seven years’ related experience working in a highly complex and technical, heterogeneous networked computing environment. Experience directly supervising employees required. Expert knowledge of IT infrastructure management techniques, virtualization solutions, system administration on various platforms, data storage, backup and disaster recovery, and supporting software packages. In-depth understanding of information security, IPAM technologies and techniques, database configuration and management, and system monitoring utilities. Detailed knowledge and experience enabling and supporting application development, and troubleshooting and performance-tuning of IT services and applications. Demonstrated understanding of data center management, configurations, and designs. Working knowledge of a range of computing equipment and software including a wide range of server platforms and workstations, network attached storage appliances, disk drives, RAM, network protocols, Apple OS/X, Windows (workstation, server, terminal services), Unix (Solaris, OS/X, Linux), TCP/IP, SMB, DHCP, DNS, productivity software, multimedia software, Internet services (Web, SFTP, etc.), groupware, and a variety of high-level programming languages (Perl, PHP, shell, C variants) and databases (PostgreSQL, mySQL). Demonstrated project management experience and with costing of IT projects.

Skills: Strong communications skills, with the ability to communicate professionally and efficiently both verbally and in writing. Strong analytical skills, problem solving skills, and time management skills to permit simultaneous action on many tasks, many of which will demand timely completion; management, team leadership, and project management skills.

Other: Ability to handle, lift and manipulate computer hardware (up to 25 kg) and electronic equipment and relevant testing equipment. Strong commitment to high quality service. With an energetic and enthusiastic attitude. Strong initiative and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
