Description

Reporting to the Faculty Registrar and Director of Student Academic Services (Faculty Registrar), the Director, Student Communication, oversees the creation of public relations, strategies, marketing and communication plans that will advance the Faculty of Arts and Science strategic student enrolment management goals. As a leader and a mentor, the Director manages a staff of high-calibre professionals and assumes overall responsibility for human resources, labour relations and financial management including dispute resolution and compliance of collective agreements. The Director also oversees a large array of marketing and communication initiatives and projects. The Director actively participates in senior-level decision-making and is responsible for liaising and working closely with senior administrators and Strategic Communications on crisis- and issues-management communication to students, faculty and staff, and to external stakeholders (e.g. school counsellors, parents, other post-secondary institutions) ensuring appropriate consultation and process.

The Director provides guidance and advice to the Faculty Registrar and members of the Registrar’s senior team, as well as to members of the Dean’s Office on media and communications strategies for critical student issues and for advancing the Faculty’s profile both nationally and internationally. The Director oversees the development of a comprehensive strategic communications plan in support of the Faculty’s strategic student enrolment management plan, ensures compliance with the Faculty’s visual identity, and undertakes market research to advance the Faculty’s objectives. The Director is also responsible for developing an internal communication plan aimed at keeping staff and departments abreast of new student-focused initiatives within the Faculty and on changes to established policies and procedures. The Director consults broadly to develop strategies and provide guidance and advice to FAS administrators, faculty and staff on student communications related to public relations, and marketing.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION: University degree in communications/public relations or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 6 to 7 years’ experience in student and/or registrarial communications and marketing management, with extensive experience in successfully managing complex projects and highly charged issues on behalf of a high-profile public institution. Demonstrated skills and experience in managing and leading staff in a unionized environment. Experience in working with expert contractors and monitoring performance against agreed-upon deliverables. Strong record of collaborations and partnerships. Experience in developing strategic student communication plans and leading marketing research initiatives. Demonstrated experience in project management. Experience working in a complex post-secondary environment a definite asset.

SKILLS: Outstanding writing and editing skills; excellent oral and presentation skills. Ability to deal professionally with tension and conflicts. Outstanding communications judgment. Expert in-depth knowledge of student communication business systems and technology. Ability to make strategic communications decisions on behalf of the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Registrar and the leadership of the Faculty. Demonstrated creativity and ability to think strategically. Detail oriented to ensure accurate and reliable implementation of communication strategies. Proficiency in computer applications (Microsoft Office). Understanding of social media and other platforms.
