UBC Energy and Water Services provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. The Utilities Plumbing group is responsible for providing utilities plumbing services, as well as moving and general labour services for all of the Vancouver campus.

This position works within the Utilities Plumbing crew; a team engaged in the ongoing maintenance and periodic renewal of the campus piping infrastructure. The Labourer working in conjunction with the Utilities Plumbers performs physical work, operates specialized equipment (HIAB knuckle boom truck, bobcat and back hoe), performs maintenance work in the Utilities Plumbing crew; working within relevant safety regulations and in the safest, simplest, sustainable and most efficient manner.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Utilities Trade Manager and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Head or Sub Head Utilities Plumbers. Responsibilities are performed both independently as well as with Utilities Plumbers and other Steamfitters, depending on the nature of the work.

Work Performed

Assists with the Utilities Plumbers through general labour duties using specialized equipment (HIAB & back-hoe) as well as site prep, manual labourer, general site clean-up. All typically withstanding incumbent weather situations.
Assists in landscaping, maintenance, construction and development of landscaped areas of the University campus.
Operates light, medium and heavy vehicles and special construction and maintenance equipment (including, but not limited to, power washers, line trimmers, lawn mowers, backpack blowers, jack hammers, tampers, concrete vibrators, concrete/asphalt coring and cutting equipment, sandblasting equipment, bobcats, and any other special equipment.
May monitor the work of a group of Labourers in an assigned area as designated by the Head Labourer or Sub-Head Labourer; participates in the work and ensures those under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner.
Requests and receives tools, equipment and material for the work assigned.
Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Supervision Received

The Labourer 3 reports to the Mechanical Utilities Manager and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Head or Sub Head Utilities Plumber. The Labourer 3 works from oral and written instructions and according to established departmental policies and procedures.

Supervision Given

The Labourer 3 may monitor the work of a group of labourers in an assigned area to ensure work is being performed correctly and in a timely fashion.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Labourer 3 determines the most efficient and effective way to operate equipment to perform work; incorrect decisions generally result in minor delays.

Qualifications

High School graduation and Valid B.C. Driver’s License. Secondary school education and/or completion of high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid and subsisting Class 5 drivers license with a satisfactory driving record. Current HIAB and flagging certificate preferred. Ability to follow policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships. the equivalent combination of education and experience.
