Hours of Work: 8-hour shifts

Shifts: Days, evenings, nights and weekends with full time; part time and casual available

Position Summary: The Safety Coordinator, under the direction of the Clinical Coordinator, ensures the safety and security of the environment at the Overdose Prevention Site and surrounding property using a non-judgmental approach. This role includes the management of exterior space, providing assistance as required to the staff in the Overdose Prevention Site and providing mediation and skilled de-escalation to clients accessing the Overdose Prevention Site. The Safety Coordinator must ensure monitoring of the premises, clients, community members, and staff to ensure there is a safe environment for everyone. The Safety Coordinator must maintain a professional and positive working relationship with emergency services including RCMP and EMS.

The successful candidate will have prior training and experience in a security setting, will understand methods of conflict resolution, will have experience working with people who use substances, solid references to support their compassion toward people, and will display confidence, strength of character, and a willingness to learn and grow.

  • Patrol of the building and exterior while keeping in contact with the Overdose Prevention staff via cell phone.
  • Preparing for shift change by relating any information to help assist the oncoming staff.
  • Dealing with enquiries from staff, clients, and public.
  • Responding to any security issues within the facility and the surrounding outside grounds
  • Performs any related activity that has been asked of by the Responsible Person in Charge in the Overdose Prevention Site.
  • Experience working in high-stress situations, which may include emergency response.
  • Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management and organizational skills including the ability to deal with several priorities at the same time
  • Resiliency, stress tolerance and the ability to maintain composure, remain calm and focused when dealing with a high volume of volatile and stressful situations
  • The ability to make sound rational decisions based on information provided and employ critical thinking where information may not be clear.
  • Strong strategically-focused analytical skills, good common sense; and capacity to provide leadership
  • Well-developed interpersonal, conflict resolution and negotiating skills
  • Resourcefulness and knowledge of community resources and social support systems

  • Ensure the safety of all stakeholders, including patients, clinical staff and visitors with de-escalation techniques and, if needed, physical intervention.

  • Sustain effective relationships with key stakeholders and provide specialized security services according to client needs.
  • Develop thorough site knowledge, and maintain professional relationships with site staff
  • Respond to emergency calls for assistance
  • Ability to remain calm and effectively perform in emergency situations.
  • Write comprehensive incident reports as per policy
  • Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
  • Have basic knowledge of security procedures, handling violent behaviours, and non-defensive communication.
  • Follow and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures.
  • Handle private and confidential information with a high amount of discretion.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Must possess a High School Diploma
  • Must have a Clean Criminal Record
  • Must be 18 years old and meet all other minimum requirements for a security license in the Province.
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention
  • Basic Security Training
  • First Aid

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the human services field is an asset
  • Experience working in a shift work environment preferred
  • Completion of a college or university program in any of the following; human services, police sciences, criminology or other related programs is an asset
