The Trillium Lakelands District School Board invites applications for an AETC Program Officer. The Program Officer will promote all AETC programs including Literacy Basic Skills, R.E.A.L., PLAR, Day School, Night School, Summer School, Online Courses, Co-op, PSW, and Maturity Credits and be able to provide information on Board programs including OYAP and Dual Credits. The AETC Program Officer would be able to effectively network within the community and spend time at each of the schools to assist with alleviating potential barriers and increase student success and public confidence. The successful candidate will support the development of proactive and effective communications for the Alternate Education Schools. This includes internal and external communications activities, social media, website coordination, media relations, and advertising. The AETC Program Officer will also be responsible for supervision and leadership for the Real Program Assistant.

This is a twelve month position.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an annual marketing plan for the AETCs. Review past strategies and evaluate effectiveness;
  • Establish effective consistent and equitable marketing objectives for the 6 AETCs that will utilize “anewstart” branding. Increase the familiarity of “anewstart” in local communities. Establish an effective advertising campaign in conjunction with the TLDSB Communications Department including print, radio ads, flyers and posters. Promote and monitor the “anewstart” brand as a key component of ensuring public confidence in public education;
  • Keep website current, update course information, student resources etc.;
  • Utilize Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media to advertise upcoming events, courses, student achievements etc.;
  • Actively seek out prospective students including early leavers from local high schools and past AETC students as well as prospective students in the community in the form of “on the street” recruitment;
  • Recruitment for Night School, Summer School in both the community and area schools;
  • Present at local job fairs, open houses, parent teacher nights and other venues;
  • Meet with students and their families along with AETC administrative staff to individually plan graduation pathways. Meet face to face to discuss barriers that may be keeping them from attending school, explore creative options which will allow that student to reach graduation utilizing the programs available in the AETCs as well as Board programs including dual credit and OYAP opportunities;
  • Provide prospective students and their families with tours of the AETCs, introduce them to staff and familiarize them with Alternate Education opportunities at each site;
  • Provide the Administration with student information and assist with registration. Follow up with students to see how they are doing and to help ensure their success;
  • Promote AETC courses and programs to institutions and the public, relevant community agencies and organizations;
  • Network with community BIAs, local industry and business to provide information about paid co-op and other AETC program opportunities;
  • Compose, edit, design, and produce brochures, articles, web materials, and presentation materials directed at both internal and external audiences consistent with the TLDSB beliefs, mission, and strategic directions;
  • Assist with digital and other photography/video to support communications materials and special events;
  • Respond to email and phone requests to provide information and resolve any concerns or issues;
  • Network with local community support resources, like Chrysalis House, YMCA, youth groups, District Health Unit, CAS, OW, ODSP to establish partnerships that will benefit our current students and to recruit new students;
  • Monitor AETCs outside signage;
  • Ensure promotional materials are current and available to all AETCs;
  • Search out and prepare grant and funding applications which could both increase and support the program offerings at the AETCs;
  • Plan special events, college visits, field trips, outdoor education opportunities etc.;
  • Seek out and coordinate presenters and guest speakers for the AETCs ie: Community Colleges, financial literacy, mental health etc.;
  • Prepare both Ministry and Board Reports.

Qualifications: Post-secondary education with a preferred focus on public relations, communications, marketing or an acceptable combination of formal education and relevant experience
This position requires a demonstrated level of initiative and judgment in order to organize and prioritize tasks, workload, and projects. Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are required in dealing with internal and external audiences.
Other skills required include:

  • Positive, energetic motivated team player with the ability to deal with high pressure situations in a fast-paced work environment;
  • Ability to communicate (verbal, written, online) information in a clear, concise, and transparent manner;
  • Demonstrated history of active social networking online;
  • Knowledge and awareness of K-12 education in Ontario;
  • Working knowledge of the following:
  • WordPress
  • Google Analytics and/or other analytics scripting
  • Microsoft Office – Word, Power Point, Excel
  • Google Drive
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and multitask effectively;
  • Demonstrated ability to take own initiative and work independently;
  • Networking skills and the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, businesses and the general public;
  • Leadership skills;
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
