Dept/Health System: Instititue for Better Health

Status: Temporary Part Time – minimum 2.5 days per week, 7.5 hours per day

– for approximately 12 months

Trillium Health Partners’ Strategic Plan has identified research as a key priority for achieving its vision of delivering a new kind of health care for a healthier community and the Institute for Better Health (IBH) was created to support this vision.

The Role

We are seeking a Research Associate to support research studies and initiatives across the organization. The successful candidate will work in a multivariate stakeholder environment both independently and as part of a collaborative multi-disease focused research group assisting on various projects. This role facilitates the responsible conduct of research through support of research studies within THP. This support includes coordinating research study logistics, timelines and budgets; and undertaking the daily study activities and meeting the ethics and regulatory requirements of various research studies. This is a unique opportunity to be exposed to the hospital setting, support innovative health research and to play a pivotal role in enabling and mobilizing health research within and beyond the walls of Trillium Health Partners.

Project Specific Details & Requirements:

Project Details: Patient narratives have the potential to improve the engagement of patients in their care, increase patient understanding of their condition, and allow them to engage in meaningful and informed communication with their providers. They can also help teach providers to be mindful of the individual experience of patients. It is important to understand, however, that narratives only have the potential to enhance the practice of compassionate care and engage patients if they are used effectively. Much of the current focus in narrative medicine has been on creating methods to capture patient stories rather than on evaluating them, tracking their uptake, and determining whether they are achieving their intended impact in the real world. Other media production industries, like film and advertising, place great emphasis on getting user feedback on content to assess engagement, developing content distribution strategies and defining metrics to determine if the content is impactful.

This project seeks to use strategies effective in other media industries to understand what online patient narrative content is currently being produced and how it is being used. The major objectives are to develop a practical online search strategy to make it easier to find and curate online patient narrative content and to develop a method to critically review existing content to see if it is effectively reaching their intended audience. We will then carry out the search strategy and content analysis in different medical topic areas and map out key insights and gaps in the content. Key learnings will help us understand what makes content engaging to patients and to develop content distribution strategies to maximize use of content by intended audiences.

Project Role Requirements: The successful candidate must meet the following qualifications, and demonstrate the ability to take on the following responsibilities:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in health design, communications, health science or a related field or relevant college certification with 5+ years of experience supporting research
  • 3+ years of experience working in a health related field

  • Must be proficient in MS Office, specifically Excel
  • Experience with statistical (Stata or SAS preferred) and referencing software (EndNote) an asset
  • Interest in social media, video and storytelling is an asset
  • Demonstrated initiative, independence, organization and productivity

  • Support Research Ethics Board application
