Job Description: The Berwick Recreation Department offers 8 weeks of Summer Day Camps for youth between the ages of 4 and 12 years old. The Day Camps offer a variety of recreation and leisure programs that are developed by the Supervisor and Counsellors of the Day Camps. Activities such as: outdoor activities, indoor activities, arts & crafts, sports, trips, games, and many other activities take place during the camps. The Supervisor is responsible for setting up the Summer Programs and seeing that they are followed through by themselves and the other staff hired for the summer. The Summer Day Camp Supervisor is a very demanding position and requires a lot of skills to ensure a quality program is offered. Strong leadership skills are a prerequisite.


 Current post-secondary level of study in the field of Education or Recreation. Experience and/or training in the fields of Community Development and/or Public Relations would be advantageous.

 Must be returning to school in the fall of 2018.

 Strong knowledge of youth programming

 Strong skills in dealing with staff concerns and problems as well as dealing with parents.

 Proven experience with developing and implementing broad base youth programming.

 Experience or training or a combination of, working with children with special needs.

 Experience with staff oversight – training, scheduling and management.

 Good mediation skills.

 Must work well independently but also in a team environment.

 Must have or be willing to take a CPR/First Aid course and other related courses. Training is provided by the Town of Berwick and the County of Kings with other municipal recreation departments and the Day Camp Supervisor and Day Camp Counsellors are expected to attend these training sessions.

Responsibilities and Duties/Administrative:

 To develop and set standards for the Day Camp Programs, ie. Attendance, behavior, and dress code.

 To promote the Day Camp to the Public Sector. For example: developing flyers, social media posts, media releases, as well as talking to schools and community groups.

 To develop a Parents Manual to ensure parents are well informed before their children attend the program.

 To be responsible for Day Camp purchases and for recording Day Camp expenditures and revenues making sure the Camps are running within the budget.

 To be responsible for accounting of staff working hours and reporting it to the Recreation Intern/Recreation Coordinator.

 To obtain and confirm proper resources, equipment, and facilities for the Program.

 To provide a written report at the end of the summer. The Report should include recommendations, statistics, changes, contacts, agendas, and the children enrolled.Staffing

 Assist in selecting and interviewing the Counsellors for the Day Camp Program.

 To act as Senior Staff Person in providing leadership, guidance, and safety to campers and staff.

 To be responsible for evaluating and mentoring the Day Camp program and staff during and after the program.

 To be responsible for supervising the Day Camp counsellors and delegating responsibilities to these staff members.

 To manage any problems that may occur between counsellors, campers, parents, or the public sector.

 Plan, lead, and attend regular staff meetings to discuss Day Camp activities.Programming

 To set Day Camp objectives and goals and be responsible for implementation.

 To plan and implement activities suitable for children between the ages of 4 and 12 years old.

 To handle any discipline problems that may occur in the Camps.

 To ensure the proper procedures are followed at all times.


 Perform other duties as required by the Recreation Department.

 To ensure a strong communication link is made between the Director of Community Development, the Recreation Intern, and the Recreation Coordinator.

 Must be available to work until the end of the contract.
