Job Summary:

Reporting to the Park Lead Hand, the Parks Development Assistant will support the delivery of municipal recreation services, including recreation programs, playgrounds and sports fields; and manage the landscaping, care and maintenance of municipal recreation facilities, community centers and green spaces. The Parks Development Assistant will be an effective team member whose contributions will assist in the achievement of departmental objectives while ensuring the clean, safe, efficient and economic delivery of services and product. It is anticipated that the position will provide training that will instill or further develop an interest, and encourage study in the ‘green’ sector whether in a planning, recreation, horticulture, or other, field.

Required Education / Work Experience:

 Current study in the field of Landscaping, Horticulture, Urban Planning is preferable, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 A valid class 5 license and a satisfactory driving record is required.

 CPR and First Aid Certification required or a willingness to undergo training for those and/or other related safety courses.

Skills and Abilities / Work Demands:

 Demonstrated ability to operate small tools / equipment and light duty vehicles in a proficient manner.

 Physical ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs, push and pull equipment and parts weighing up to 100 lbs, independently or assisted; to walk, stand, sit, lift from floor to waist, lift from waist to shoulder, climb stairs, and climb ladders and any other physical ability required to perform assigned duties.

 Ability to work shift work (days, evenings, nights), overtime, weekends or unscheduled call-ins.

 Significant amount of time spent working outdoors, and in inclement weather (within reason and safety), to include hot, humid, cold, rain etc.

 Ability to deal effectively with complaints from the public and the skill to direct their concerns to a member of the municipal personnel who is best able to respond to the inquiry.

 Ability to receive and comprehend instructions; work in a team environment or independently; interact positively with supervisors, other staff, and the general public; as well as support and project values compatible with the Municipality.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 To assist in the development of a Multi-Generational Park within Rainforth and Centennial Parks. This will include, but not be limited to, the inclusion and construction of a Multi-Use Recreational building, green space design, new and re-established plantings, development of walk ways, fencing, respite seating, community passive space and community active space for all ages and interests.

 To assist with the integration and operation of the new community ‘Splash Pad’ water park for young children. The splash pad was constructed in the summer of 2017 to encourage outdoor activity in youth but has not yet been opened to the public. Work to assimilate the Splash Pad with a new Multi-Use Recreation Building and the surrounding park will begin in early 2018.

 To assist with the Phase ll work in the new Bike Skills Park allowing for mountain biking, BMX riding and other active recreation activities such as walking, hiking and winter activities such as snowshoeing and coasting. Included in this project will be landscaping needs related to the protection of an area that encourages and supports the Monarch butterfly, the development of plantings that stop sifting bank erosion and the re-establishment of green space plantings which will stabilize a sandy soil.

 Design and development of a new ‘Pocket Park’ at the base of the over-sized, iconic Berwick ‘Apple’ statue integrating berm creation, plantings, respite seating and walkways.

 To develop and construct a new ‘Rally Cap’ Ball field for beginner age youth and to continue to make minor improvements to the existing ball fields.

 To develop and construct a new outdoor Basketball Court and a new outdoor Volleyball Court for youth programming and community use.

 To develop and construct a new outdoor Shuffleboard Court to encourage active living.

 To assist with trail development throughout the Town as may be required.

 To assist the volunteer Community Garden Group with preparation, planting, monitoring and other work as necessary to develop their work on raised vegetable beds within and for the community.

 To assist the Director of Community Development and Recreation with park, summer day camp and special event programming throughout the summer as needed.

 To assist the Lead Hand in maintaining parks, playgrounds and public green spaces in the Town of Berwick.

 Perform general labour, maintenance and repair activities on municipal recreational facilities and lands including, but not limited to camp facilities, playgrounds, sports fields and community centres and park buildings as needed.

 Participate and perform facility program and maintenance activities as required.

 To maintain effective, professional, courteous and respectful communications with supervisors, other staff, and the general public.

 Evenings and week-ends will be required.
