PRODUCTION MANAGER

Tony’s Meats Ltd. is a privately owned company producing and retailing an extensive selection of quality raw and fully cooked further processed meat products under the Tony’s MeatsTM and Mr. DonairTM brands. Established in 1963 Tony’s Meats Ltd is the only federally inspected, SQF Level 2, Halal Certified meat processing facility in Nova Scotia.

The Production Manager is a key member of our team responsible for overseeing all aspects of daily plant operations including processing, shipping receiving, dry storage and sanitation. This individual must ensure each department is meeting daily targets on the floor and producing the highest quality and safest product possible.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Co-ordinate work activities in each department.
  • Communicate any equipment operational or breakdown issues to the Maintenance Manager to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain a professional employee environment to all plant workers.
  • Establish work schedules based on inventory levels and established productivity targets
  • Ensure productivity targets are being met and communicate reasons for shortfalls to the Operations Manager.
  • Continuously evaluate production areas and identify areas for improvement.
  • Recommend measures to improve productivity and product quality
  • Supervise, co-ordinate and schedule activities of workers
  • Train staff in job duties, safety procedures and company policies
  • Interview, evaluate and conduct performance appraisals with employees
  • Tactfully and professionally address all employee performance, or team conflict related issues including executing and documenting progressive disciplinary action(s) up to and including termination.
  • Implement OHS program, including monthly meetings, complete incident reports, train all employees on safety policies and any required tech. training for Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Ensure that employees are working safely and according to Occupational Health and Safety standards.
  • Provide support to the HACCP, SQF and Quality teams by ensuring employees are performing production activities as per program requirements
  • Communicate all ingredient, safety or quality issues to the appropriate members of the management team for resolution.
  • Cover key responsibilities for Processing Supervisor(s) in times of absence.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:
The successful candidate will be results-oriented, thrive in a fast paced, demanding environment, and have the ability to develop positive working relationships with associates and employees.

Candidates must have:

  • Post-secondary education or 5-10 years of experience in the meat processing industry.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in a management role
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (English a must bilingual an asset)
  • Proven decision making ability using various analytical tools (variance reports, KPI’s, Six Sigma, Kaizan, downtime analysis, SWOT analysis,etc.)
  • Knowledge of raw and fully cooked meat processing and packaging techniques
  • Working knowledge commonly used meat processing and packaging equipment
  • Knowledge of food sanitation and maintenance processes and procedures
  • Experience leading teams through food safety and third party audits (eg SQF, Halal)
  • Customer service skills and a professional communicator;
  • Excellent organization, time management and delegation skills;
  • Experience in change management and problem solving
  • The ability to analyze production data and communicate to upper management in report format
  • Strong computer skills including – e-mail, MS office, particularly Excel and word.
