The Home Depot is Canada’s largest home improvement retailer with 182 store locations across Canada. We’re looking for a strategic, analytical thinker who will help us achieve our energy reduction goals across our portfolio of stores, distribution centres and corporate offices. The Energy Specialist is responsible for supporting energy savings initiatives and reducing energy-related costs, while continuously gauging and understanding the experience of customers and associates as a result of these initiatives.
As part of the Building Services & Energy Solutions department within The Home Depot, the Energy Specialist will work closely with individuals responsible for the delivery of maintenance, vendor management and capital programs for the stores. Building Services & Energy Solutions (BSES) is responsible for the management of store buildings, none-merchandising assets, and energy, providing The Home Depot with a competitive edge in the home improvement industry by ensuring our customers and associates have a safe, welcoming environment to shop and work.
The team uses an analytics-focused approach to evaluate total cost of ownership, refine service programs and achieve optimal building performance. This includes a high-degree of focus on energy and making data-driven decisions to deliver proactive, predictive and preventative maintenance programs. As part of our commitment to energy conservation and cost reduction, the Energy Specialist will aid in the identification and implementation of energy conservation initiatives including strategic capital investments, building operations management and low cost/no cost programs. Additionally, the Energy Specialist will assist in budgeting and planning for utility costs and consumption.
This role will manage be responsible for the following activities for in relation to energy efficiency projects and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by:
Primary responsibility will be to aid in the identification and evaluation of energy efficient technologies and carry projects through to implementation, tracking, measurement & verification and final reporting
Coordinate the implementation of energy-saving projects, including the planning, budgeting, and scheduling for the design, installation, commissioning and verification of energy efficiency projects
Perform site inspections, building audits and energy analysis to identify opportunities with respect to lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation equipment, and other energy consuming processes or equipment
Prepare feasibility studies, cost estimates, pay-back calculations and recommendations for new energy-savings opportunities
Provide recommendations for capital and maintenance improvements and support the Manager of Energy Solutions in the preparation of business cases for presentation to senior management and Finance
Track and monitor energy consumption at each facility as well as progress towards achieving energy conservation targets
Contribute to sustainable development initiatives and ensure accurate records are maintained, energy monitoring data is collected regularly, and utility incentives are submitted in a timely manner.
Assist in the completion of utility incentives for capital initiatives
Actively participate in discussions with local distribution companies (LDCs) and monitor information on various incentive programs available throughout Canada including lighting, HVAC, roofing, plumbing and any other energy-related categories
Coordinate and assist with site inspections by the LDC/IESO (or their respective designate) from time to time of the various measures implemented
Work with the Manager of Energy Solutions to build upon the current energy management strategy
Assist in the evolution and implementation of The Home Depot’s energy conservation engagement program for associates
Assist in the management of The Home Depot’s building management system with outsourced energy management vendor
Refine processes and execution of data collection and analysis for gas, electricity and water consumption
Take active participation in The Home Depot’s Sustainability program as a member of the Sustainability Committee
Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations to senior management on progress towards financial, budgetary and consumption goals
Demonstrate the ability to accurately analyze information and aid in energy forecasting and budgeting
Submit Quarterly Reports with detailed updates on the progress towards of annual energy savings targets for incented and non-incented initiatives, and prepare an annual Energy Management Plan
Accountability: This role will have annual goals for the spend they manage, supplier management metrics, and customer service metrics to gauge how well they are driving energy efficiency, value for the company and satisfying the needs of their internal customers.

The degree to which data management and reporting are carried out and maintained.
The degree with which Company business is conducted in a professional and ethical manner.
Must meet minimum time in position requirements and Performance Management code of “V2″ (Valued Associate – Well Positioned).
Post-secondary education preferred and/or equivalent years of experience.
Professionally designated as a certified engineering technician or technologist (CET), or a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of Ontario, with a strong background in commercial, institutional or industrial energy use, as applicable, and energy management.
Designated as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or designation within one (1) year of the start date.
3-4 years of experience supporting and implementing energy efficiency projects and analysis for industrial and commercial buildings is preferred .
Intermediate level of knowledge of energy using systems (lighting systems, plumbing and HVAC) and energy savings measures and technologies for retail commercial or industrial applications.
Intermediate level of knowledge of energy analysis, modeling and reporting .
Strong analytical skills and experience with energy analysis software, such as RETScreen, is considered an asset.
Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Microsoft Excel in particular
Must demonstrate the ability to take initiative and motivate self and others to set and achieve high performance standards.
Must demonstrate the ability to interface effectively and collaborate professionally with associates, management and project personnel to develop solutions and ensure stakeholder buy-in.
Project management and technical aptitude and analytical skills.
Strong written and verbal communications skills; multi-tasking abilities; experience in building partnerships; conflict resolution; effective time and work management, benchmarking, supplier management; performance measurement monitoring.
Organized; professional; self-starter; team focused; persuasive; customer service oriented.
Travel requirements approx. 10-20%.
