Mandate

The mandate of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Edmonton is to advance the dignity and worth of women and girls who are criminalized and those who are considered at risk.

Summer Student Opportunity With approval from Canada Summer Jobs (Government of Canada), and/or the Alberta Summer Temporary Employment Program, we will be hiring 1-4 summer student(s) for May-August 2017.

Duties and Responsibilities may include:

  • Planning, organizing and implementing a summer calendar of events and activities for women who access our drop-in.
  • Assisting and supporting our Girls Empowered and Strong Program summer activities for girls.
  • Conducting Intake, which includes individual support, resource distribution, crisis support, and referrals to partnerships.
  • Workshop facilitation, presentation, and preparation.
  • Event planning, follow up, and coordination.
  • Fundraising, fund development, social media coordination.
  • Prison visits, advocacy, follow up, and support.
  • Other duties as required and as approved through the funding agreements.

Desired Education, Skills, and Personal Attributes

  • MUST be returning to post-secondary studies in the fall.
  • Some post-secondary education related to the human services field.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, community, spirituality, traditions, ceremony, and connection to Elders is a definite asset.
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, issues involving women in conflict with the legal system, addictions, self-harming behaviours, communication, conflict resolution, and stress management.
  • Volunteer experience and/or employment with non-profit agencies an asset.
  • Eligible for prison clearance.
  • Knowledge of social media, fundraising experience, and interest in fund development is a definite asset.
  • Group facilitation experience an asset.
  • Must be non-judgmental, empathetic, and sincere; must possess strong communication and listening skills.
  • Access to own transportation.
  • Funding may have an age requirement: between the ages of 18-30.

Full time – 35 hours/ week. Rate of pay is dependent on funding secured.

Approximation of summer employment: May 8 – August 25, 2017. The successful applicant must be available for the duration of the summer term.

NOTE: Summer students of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Edmonton are asked to complete a small project that has meaning to the organization and/or to the individuals we serve. Those applicants who are invited to an interview will be asked to do a 5 minute presentation on a meaningful project that they would feel excited to organize, lead, and implement. Ideas of meaningful projects may include: a fundraising event, a fund development initiative, a volunteer recognition event, a community awareness initiative, a summer program for women in the community, or other ideas of the applicants’ choosing.
