Job Summary :
Under the supervision of the Community Program Coordinator, the Fitness Specialist will be responsible for providing a safe and pleasant environment for all members using the fitness facilities.

This position is also responsible for conducting the City of Markham New Member On-Boarding program to support members to achieve their personal goals.

Note : The successful candidate will be required to perform duties as a Fitness Specialist for both Levels 1 and 2 and will be required to work early mornings, evenings and weekends. The base wage rate will be that of a Level 1 Fitness Specialist and when doing assessments or working independently, the hourly rate for the Level 2 Fitness Specialist will apply.

Job Duties: Fitness Specialist Level 1 ($15.79-$17.54):
Supervises activity within the fitness facilities, watch for unsafe activity in order to prevent injuries or accidents and instruct members on use of all equipment. Schedules clients (City employees and the general public) for fitness related orientations and appointments. Demonstrates proper fitness techniques to clients. Schedules Fitness Re-assessment or program review. Ensures the site, equipment and supplies are appropriate to the activity and environment and report the maintenance of the equipment in a timely manner to the Community Program Coordinator. The ability to work effectively with a wide range of fitness levels in a diverse community. Approachable and open to input from participants

Job Duties: Fitness Specialist Level 2 ($18.76-$20.84):
Evaluates client needs in physical activity and nutrition based on the CSEP – PATH (Physical Activity Training for Health) and provides the client with a safe and effective exercise plan based on their needs, abilities and goals. Monitors client resting and exercise heart rate and blood pressure regularly. Confirms that clients have completed the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q developed by Health Canada), and then provides an individualized training session. Develops a client specific exercise plan within the client’s level of ability and progresses to more advanced training techniques with clients once the proper competency has been achieved. Ensures that one-on-one educational fitness program promotes a health and fitness through realistic goal setting and education. Modifies all client exercise techniques as needed

Qualifications: Fitness Specialist Levels 1 / 2
Minimum 2 years Community College Diploma, preferably in Fitness and Health Promotion. Possess a valid Personal Training Certification (CanFit Pro, ACSM, CPTN, NSCA or equivalent). Current Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Certification or licensed Kinesiologist (College of Kinesiologists of Ontario) would be an asset. Group Fitness Certification and ability to teach a variety of classes an asset. Standard First Aid and CPR C from an approved WSIB vendor. Minimum one year prior experience developing personal training objectives for a variety of adult clients of various ages and abilities is required Minimum 2 years of experience in exercise prescriptions and appraisals an asset. Proven record of experience in fitness center sales and service an asset. Experience working with a variety of clients and ages. Ability to read, understands, follow, and enforce safety procedures. Excellent verbal/written communications skills, leadership skills, customer service skills and sensitivity to interact with a diversity of patrons and staff in a courteous and efficient manner. The ability to work effectively with a wide range of fitness levels in a diverse community. Knowledge of aspects of fitness, wellness, basic training principles, fitness theory (skeletal, muscular, neurological, cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and components of a workout from warm- up, cardiovascular and resistance training to cool-down.
