Job Title: Construction Instructor

Department: Skilled Trades

Location: 3335 North Service Road, Burlington, ON

Start Date: February 2017

End of Contract: June 30, 2017 (with possible extension)

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week from 7:30 am – 3 pm

(some evening hours may be required for promotional activities)

Pay Rate: $30.02 – $36.02 based on skill level, experience and education

The Opportunity

These are your responsibilities:

Instructional Skills:

  • Responsible for preparing and implementing short and long term lesson plans to meet Ministry curriculum expectations
  • Follow adult education principles for student communication and training delivery
  • Ensure all training materials and equipment are in working order; conduct basic repairs, as needed, or report problems to the Senior Program Coordinator
  • Responsible for all aspects of student assessment and evaluation, including student reporting
  • Promote, teach and practice safety and orderliness on a daily basis
  • Monitor & record student attendance
  • Ensure that all department documentation is completed in an accurate and timely manner
  • Work closely with the Student Engagement and instruction team to strategize toward the common goal of student success
  • Adapt instructional strategies and materials according to the individual learning needs of each student

What you need to bring to this job:

Technical/Theoretical Knowledge Required:

  • Framing techniques, floor, wall and roof systems
  • Roofing, skylights
  • Introduction to sub-trades – drywall & taping, ceramic tiling, plumbing, painting, hardwood/laminate flooring
  • Hand & power tool operation
  • Decks/Stairs
  • Siding
  • Door & window installation
  • Energy Star building practices
  • Finish carpentry
  • Blueprint reading
  • Estimating
  • Knowledge of Ontario Building Code
  • Visio/CAD
  • Construction Business Management, marketing and communications
  • Construction Safety Training: WHMIS, Fall Arrest, First Aid/CPR
  • Safe Work Practice a must


  • Carpenter Certificate of Qualification
  • Five – ten years of industry experience or more
  • Ontario Teaching Certificate (an asset)
  • Certificate in teaching adults/experience in helping adults learn
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR
  • Strong problem, decision making ability
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, listening)
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in working with young adults
  • Intermediate level of computer skills in Word, Excel, E-mail, Internet
