The BC SPCA is currently recruiting for a Call Centre Operator-Wildlife to work at our Call Centre in Victoria. This full-time position is from May 8 to August 25, 2017. This position may be funded by the HRSDC Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program. Applicants are required to meet CSJ criteria including:

  • must be between 15-30 years of age

  • must have been registered in full time studies during the previous academic year
  • must intend on returning to school after the summer

Position Summary:

The Call Centre Operator – Wildlife will be responsible for providing exceptional customer service and accurate and timely advice and information in inbound and outbound calls to and from the public and internal stakeholders. The role is responsible for receiving and answering inbound calls from the public pertaining to wildlife and providing advice or referrals as required to veterinarians, government agencies and wildlife centres and entering their calls into a centralized database for recording and tracking purposes.

The Call Centre Operator – Wildlife will be required to maintain a thorough understanding of the services provided by other animal agencies in BC and the accurate contact information for these agencies in order to refer members of the public appropriately as needed. The role will additionally be responsible for responding accurately and concisely to general enquiries via telephone and email in a timely manner; transferring calls within the BC SPCA and directing members of the public to areas of the BC SPCA website that offer additional information relevant to the inquiry or question received.

The Call Centre Operator – Wildlife will also be required to perform basic administrative duties for departments as requested including, but not limited to, photocopying, data entry, and document formatting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities required:

  • Minimum 1 year of post-secondary studies in Biological Sciences, Conservation or Environmental Studies, Animal Care, Legal Studies, Customer Service, Public and Office Administration, Resource Management, or relevant fieldBasic animal care experience with wild mammals and birds

  • Basic knowledge of natural history, identification, and behaviour of BC wildlife species
  • Familiar with provincial and federal government wildlife regulations and rehabilitation permit requirements
  • Strong teamwork skills and work ethic
  • Displays honesty, integrity and ethical conduct at all times
  • Is committed to professionalism and excellence in customer service
  • Reacts quickly, logically, efficiently, and calmly in emergency situations
  • Displays exceptional prioritizing and multi-tasking in an emergency, priority driven environment
  • Exhibits excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills with fast and accurate keyboarding
  • Remains flexible and adaptable in an ever changing work environment while contributing to the teams goals
  • Capable of handling a demanding workload and work weekends, as required

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience working or volunteering with animals

  • Experience working in a high volume call centre environment
  • Knowledge of British Columbia geography

Duties & Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Receives and answers inbound calls from the public pertaining to wildlife and provides advice or referrals as required.

  • Maintain detailed records of wildlife calls taken and perform data entry of files.

  • Liaise with wildlife rehabilitation organizations and perform regular research to ensure highest standards of animal care; stay abreast of current wildlife rehabilitation practices.
  • Responds to general inquiries from the public in a knowledgeable and friendly fashion.
  • Responds accurately and concisely to general enquiries via email in a timely manner. Directs members of the public to areas of the BC SPCA website that offer additional information relevant to the inquiry or question received.
  • Provides information and referrals where applicable to the public pertaining to animal questions or concerns within their community
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the Society’s programs, policies and resources in order to provide members of the public with the most accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the services provided by other animal agencies in BC and the accurate contact information for these agencies in order to refer members of the public appropriately as needed.
  • Performs basic administrative duties for departments as requested including, but not limited to, photocopying, data entry, and document formatting.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings, training and other projects as required.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Wage: $14.25 per hour (37.5 hours/week)
