The BC SPCA is 120 years young & growing stronger every year. We are a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to protecting & enhancing the quality of life for domestic, farm & wild animals in British Columbia. Through our 42 locations throughout BC & a provincial office in Vancouver, the BC SPCA provides a wide range of services & programs to help more than 45,000 animals in distress & need each year.

Our Parksville-Qualicum Beach & District Branch is in need of your helpful, energetic team spirit to fill a casual on-call position of Animal Care Attendant (ACA 1). This position will participate in all animal care duties & ensure that optimal levels of care are administered to the animals based on the Five Freedoms. You care deeply about animals & uphold the highest animal care standards. Under the direction of the Branch Manager your experience with animals will assist you:

  • To maintain the entire physical shelter in a clean, sanitary, & efficient manner on an ongoing basis & in a collaborative manner
  • To ensure kennels, runs, & cat cages are kept in a manner that is best suited for the animal’s health & welfare as per the ShelterSense protocols
  • To ensure quality care & treatment of all BC SPCA animals is provided

Answering telephones & counter inquiries in a courteous manner & providing information satisfactory to the needs of the caller

  • To maintain animals on a proper diet ensuring daily feeding, watering, exercise, & enrichment
  • To perform general bathing & grooming of animals
  • To treat animals humanely, with compassion & concern, & in a manner consistent with the BC SPCA’s five freedoms
  • To act as an ambassador of the BC SPCA at all times & ensure customer & community relations are consistently professional & positive
  • To answer telephones & walk-in inquiries in a courteous manner providing information satisfactory to the needs of the customer
  • To perform reception duties promptly & effectively

Required skills, knowledge & abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers’ License
  • Strong desire to provide excellent customer service skills: patience, professional, positive attitude, attention to detail, adaptability
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal & written
  • Resourceful team player who excels at building trusting relationships with colleagues, customers & volunteers
  • Highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative with minimal supervision
  • A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics & common diseases
  • Previous kennel or animal care experience will be considered an asset
  • Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
  • Position is physically demanding & includes heavy lifting, pushing & pulling which requires an individual with the ability to maintain a level of fitness & endurance to fulfill the required duties
  • Ability to remain calm & effective in stressful situations
  • Computer experience: Windows, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Must be flexible & able to work weekdays, weekends & statutory holidays
