Opportunity General Manager Position

St. Margaret’s Centre Sportsplex Facility is looking for a General Manager (GM) who is a motivated team builder with a proven Recreational Facility Management background. The General Manager of the SMC is responsible for the overall management, profitability, promotion and operation of the facility. This position will manage all financial, business and operation aspects of the facility and must meet the financial and strategic goals set forth annually by the governing Board of Directors. The General Manager is responsible and accountable for overseeing all aspects of the community facility known as St. Margaret’s Centre, including all staff, resources and assets of the facility.

The facility has an annual operating budget of $1.7 million and provides a wide variety of programming to the community. The role of the General Manager of the facility is to lead a staff team to deliver high quality programming, providing facilities such as commercial leased spaces, fitness programs, ice arenas and the outdoor swimming pool. Therefore, the General Manager must be aware of the current financial position always while also being visionary to look for new creative opportunities for revenue generation and programming opportunities. The GM must also ensure a high-quality facility management program is in place to provide for the safe enjoyment of the clientele while also protecting and extending the life of the physical assets of the facility. The role of the GM also includes reporting to and working with the Board of Directors to develop strategic directions and policy development for the facility, as well as providing regular reports at monthly Board meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities: * Provide leadership to staff who design, develop and implement the various programs, including the facility management programs; * Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with key community groups, HRM staff and other government agencies to understand the desires of the community, and to maximize the development and usage of the facility and delivery of programs; * Prepare business plans and strategic plans, both short and long term, in conjunction with the Board to ensure the facility has a strategic vision that is financially stable and meets the growing trends in community wellness and sports programs; * SMC’s strategic vision must sustain the principle of Lifestyle & Preventive Medicine within the delivery of programs and as directed by the Board of Directors; * Align resources with the business plan, ensuring resources are allocated to priorities, and that structures and reporting relationships are appropriate for service delivery; * Responsible for the development of a common vision and communicates the vision throughout the Board of Directors and community; * Provides clear directions and priorities to staff and clarification of roles and responsibilities; * Ensure that services are provided in the most efficient and effective way including, analyzing alternative service delivery methods, trend analysis and policy development; * Develop, incorporate and monitor a continuous customer service program in the delivery of all programming; * Recognizing the value of clients to our facility, therefore the need to maintain a high standard with regards to customer service, cleanliness and a wide variety of programs offered; * Preparation, management and justification of annual operating and capital budgets, with presentation for approval to the Board; * Provide any other regular reporting to the Board as required; * Tracking of all financial transactions, budget forecasts, and establishing lines of accountability: ensuring adherence to budgetary approvals and authorizes all extraordinary purchases within approved guidelines; * Prepare and present policies to the Board for approval that are necessary to support the delivery of all programming, as well as overall management policies such as safety, human resources, finance and program development; * Negotiate, oversee and

manage leases in regards to space opportunities within the facility as well as all facility contracts; * Develop new revenue opportunities and cost saving measures to sustain the immediate and long term responsibility of full cost recovery and financial stabilization of the facility; * To encourage tenants to foster a partnership and enhance program deliveries; * Responsible for all aspects of facility bookings/management. Education: * Post-secondary degree in Physical Education & Recreation Management and/or Business or a related field with strong knowledge of Facility and Property Management; * Additional formal training in financial management; * Experience in management of recreational facilities an asset; * Knowledge of or experience in Lifestyle & Preventive Medicine Programs an asset. Experience: * Five to eight years of progressive experience in a management position of a major multi use sports complex or comparable organization; * Strong demonstrated financial management skills and the ability to develop and negotiate leases; * Experience in developing business plans and strategic planning; * Experience in developing and monitoring a 1.7-million-dollar budget; * Experience working in a non-union working environment.
