The Physician Assistant (PA) is an academically prepared healthcare professional, educated in the medical model that practices medicine under the supervision of licensed physicians within a patient-centered healthcare team. The PA is a physician extender and not an independent practitioner.
Under the supervision of Physicians and Surgeons at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre, the PA will be integrated with other members of the primary health care team within the hospital. The PA – Surgical will primarily be responsible for surgical assistance in the Surgery department. The PA will also be responsible for comprehensive care to the surgical patient in the emergency and surgical department, which will include primary care assessments, treatment and chronic disease management follow-up as appropriate. It is important that productive, cooperative working relationships be established between the Physician Assistant and the attending physicians, other primary health care providers, itinerant consultants, health facility administrators, community leaders, and most importantly, the patients and their families.
The role of the PA would primarily be as a surgical assistant in the surgery department; assisting with triage, transfers, assisting in emergency and elective surgery, assisting in cast care, surgical ward responsibilities such as post-operative care, cast care, lab result monitoring and out-patient care.
Pre-op Care:
The PA may be involved in pre-op assessments, ensuring that all the appropriate blood work, paperwork, and pre-anaesthesia work has been done. The PA may discuss the diagnosis, surgery to be provided and risks related to this surgery with the patient. Consultations with other services may be arranged by the PA to ensure timely consultations in efforts to decrease wait times for surgery.
In Hospital Care:
This would entail primarily surgery cases, doing rounds and providing post-op care. Admission orders, consults and diagnostic tests would be ordered and followed through by the PA. The PA would work in cooperation with the health care team to coordinate the patient’s care needs with support provided by their supervising Physicians.
Intra-Operatively
The PA would assist in the surgical slates, providing surgical assistant services for general surgery.
Post-Op
The PA would be part of the surgical team managing post-op and in-hospital care until discharge. They may work with the Rehab department to ensure that post-op care and rehabilitation needs were being met.
Out-Patients
The PA may be asked to provide minor surgery/repair during the day and assist with Cast care/Cast Clinics.
Bethesda PA Structure
The Region intends to establish a team of Physician Assistants at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre to provide support.
