Healthy Kids Community Challenge (HKCC)

Part-Time, 17.5 hours per week

Contract to August 31, 2018

Hourly Rate: $30.73

The South Riverdale Community Health Centre is a non-profit, multi-service centre that provides primary health care, social and community services with an emphasis on health promotion to residents of East Toronto.

Our community is one of 45 across Ontario taking part in The Healthy Kids Community Challenge (HKCC). The HKCC unites communities with a common goal: promoting children’s health through physical activity and healthy eating. SRCHC is the lead agency for the HKCC in the Danforth-East York community.

The Community Engagement and Outreach role will work in close collaboration with the HKCC team to build community capacity for increased access to healthy food, increased physical activity and community events that focus on the importance of daily health recommendations for children 0-12 years of age to promote Theme 4 messages of “Power off and Play.”


  • Build community capacity within neighborhoods in Danforth-East York that promote children’s health through physical activity and healthy eating
  • Lead, supervise, train, mentor and support a diverse team of peers with lived experience to promote key messages of Power off and Play, activities and policy changes in their respective communities
  • Assist in the coordination and planning of workshops, trainings and staff meetings for peers and community partners
  • Oversee reduced screen time and increased access to healthy eating and physical activities for children 0-12 in Danforth-East York community through community events, programs and local challenges
  • Plan and coordinate community events and workshops with a focus on “Power off and Play” and reducing screen time
  • Ensure that program activities are monitored and evaluated for reporting purposes and overall improvement in service/program delivery
  • Work with community partners to promote the HKCC themes and implement across Danforth-East York
  • Attend and participate in Steering Committee meetings as needed
  • Monitor and update project social media platform regularly


  • Post-Secondary education from a recognized University or College or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with community based, multi-service agencies or in the not-for-profit sector
  • Skilled group facilitator and experience with popular education methods
  • Solid knowledge of healthy eating, physical literacy and children 0-12
  • Excellent coordination and organizational skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills, flexible, may be expected to work in the evenings and on weekends as required
  • Strong networking and information sharing skills
  • Creative problem solver
  • Proficiency in the use of social media, computer technology and various software applications
  • Ability to work independently and be very effective in a team environment
  • Collaborative approach with groups/project leadership
  • Knowledge of the Danforth-East York community is essential
  • Experience working with an anti-oppression framework
  • Commitment to inclusive approaches to community building
  • Demonstrated experience of working with vulnerable populations
  • Second language skills an asset
  • A valid driver’s license is required

A police clearance letter completed within the past twelve (12) months will be required prior to commencing employment.
