As part of the SNC-Lavalin group of companies, SNC-Lavalin HPD designs, develops, and delivers engineering services, including system planning & studies, procurement, and construction solutions for High Voltage power transmission line & substation projects and Telecom network projects in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and abroad.

SNC-Lavalin HPD has exciting full time career opportunities for experienced Telecom Engineers. Based out of our Vancouver office, our Telecom Engineers are primarily responsible for the delivery of telecommunication engineering studies, design, procurement & construction support and other related project tasks.

The Telecom Engineer is required to work within a multi-discipline team to design efficient and reliable telecommunication facilities. The engineer will coordinate his/her design activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project completion. The engineer will also assist the Estimating Team in preparation of estimates and project proposals.

This position is accountable to provide all design activities in accordance with all applicable codes and standards, including all of SNC-Lavalin’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.

The Telecommunications Engineer will perform the following tasks :

  • Preparation of project specifications for material and equipment purchase and installation.
  • Design of telecommunication facilities including Digital Microwave, UHF/VHF radio links & respective antennas, Fiber Optic Transmission networks, SONET & TDM multiplexers, WiMAX networks, VSAT systems, IP/MPLS networks & LAN/WAN systems, teleprotection and cable protection systems.
  • Delivery of accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and specifications as well as meet good engineering practices with excellent constructability.
  • Review of internal and external designs for code compliance with good design practice and constructability.
  • Resolving site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase of projects.
  • Maintaining complete project documentation with respect to telecom design and construction, including all completion packages, as-built requirements and return data information.
  • Making and maintaining appropriate commitments to project teams and coordinating design activities with multi-disciplined project team members.
  • Maintaining good working relationships with internal groups that support projects such as procurement, project management, construction etc.
  • Maintaining good working relationships with material suppliers, contractors, and any others that affect the quality, schedule and cost of projects.

Qualifications for the positions include:

  • A degree in Telecom Engineering (or Electrical Engineering with major in Telecommunications) from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in telecom engineering design.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point.
  • Experience in using PL4 or PL5 microwave design software.
  • Occasional travel to site locations is required.
  • Strong client focus
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to mentor less experienced team members and transfer knowledge to all team members as appropriate
  • Strong knowledge of infrastructure design and implementations
  • Registration with APEGBC would be an asset
  • Knowledge of Canadian codes and standards, including OH&S Regulations would be an asset.
