Job Description:
Sleeman Breweries Ltd. is one of the leading brewer and
distributor of premium beer in Canada and the third
largest brewing company nation-wide.
Reporting into the VP, Operations and Human Resources
the Regional Human Resources Manager will be responsible
for planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and
maximizing the strategic use of the Human Resources
operations. They will be responsible for HR policy and
procedure development, talent acquisition, compensation
and benefits, employee and labor relations, employee
development (training), organizational
development/change, performance management, and legal
and regulatory compliance within assigned Region. Manage
and administer Regional Human Resources at all levels
from tactical coordination to strategic implementation.
This position will manage 2-4 professional employees.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Policies and Strategies

  • Assist in development and implementation of HR

initiatives, strategies, best practices, policies
and procedures.

  • Conduct, review and analyze investigations

involving alleged misconduct and policy violation
issues (e.g., discrimination and harassment); make
recommendation to senior management on resolution
and prevention measures.

  • Contribute to the HR team objectives, mission and

strategy.

  • Contribute to the growth of the company through

actively promoting Sleeman internally.

  • Identify and determine causes of personnel issues

and develop recommendations for improvement.

  • Assist with corporate initiatives.

Management

  • Oversee all of the Regional Human Resources

department operations and processes.

  • Actively partners with the management team in the

establishment of the strategic direction for the
business, including identification of organizational
development needs and overall alignment of HR
programs and systems to achieve business results.

  • Ensure all employment practices, compensation,

employee benefits and human resources programs are
within the limits of established standards,
procedures, guidelines and policies.

  • Maintain communication and liaise with corporate HR

on all HR related issues; maintain a high degree of
confidentiality with employee and company
information.

  • Partner with managers providing them with coaching,

guidance and continuous feedback, as well as
assisting them in developing strategies to enhance
overall employee satisfaction and alignment with
business strategies.

  • Coach and counsel management on various employee

related processes including performance management,
talent management, and employee discipline. Escalate
serious matters as required.

  • Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and

strategic plans and adhere to department budget.

  • Assist in various employee and management meetings

on a weekly basis

  • Advocate principles of sound people management

practices

  • Review and analyze HR metrics and reporting.

Talent Acquisition

  • Oversee the regional recruitment process and

related activities.

  • Oversee the coordination and forecasting of

staffing needs for departments.

  • Develop and implement a workforce and human

resources planning framework that will attract,
retain and motivate talent, build management
capability, and communicate to business objectives.

  • Recommend and implement procedures to reduce

absenteeism and turnover
Compensation and Benefits

  • Assist and collaborate with Total Rewards Manager

(TRM) to obtain competitive market research to
establish pay practices and incentives

  • Assist the TRM with pay equity practices and

incentives

  • Oversee all short-term and long-term disability

claims management.
Employee Relations

  • Guide and oversee positive resolution of employee

relations issues.

  • Serve as regional focal point for managers in

employment law, assuring knowledge of requirements
and participating in developing processes/education
to assure compliance

  • Serve as a link between management and employees by

handling questions, interpreting and administering
contracts and policies striving to resolve issues.

  • Partner with management and HR team to ensure

thorough knowledge of and compliance with policies
and procedures; respond to inquiries.

  • Lead the development and implementation of programs

that will drive increased employee engagement and
commitment levels (eg: wellness).

  • Partner and advise managers on hiring, promotions

and terminations
Labour Relations

  • Work with management and the union leadership to

find optimal solutions to issues through joint
meetings and ongoing relationship development

  • Partner with management and HR team to ensure

compliance with Collective Agreements; assist in
interpreting collective agreements

  • Partner with management, HR and VP, Operations and

HR regarding employee-related hearings and
investigations.

  • Partner with management, HR and VP, Operations and

HR in negotiating collective bargaining agreements.
Employee Training and Development

  • Partner with Corporate HR to assess departmental

training and development needs through job analysis,
appraisals and consultation with the manager.

  • Partner with Corporate HR to design and develop

training and development programs based on both the
organizational and the individual’s needs.

  • Ensure Region specific training is cost effective

and funds are adequately used and compliant with
relative local legislation.

  • Review post-training evaluations and propose new

suppliers or changes to the present training given

  • Educate managers and supervisors on training policy

and procedures, as well as focusing on the their
development in the area of HR practices and
legislation

  • Partner with Corporate HR to define standards for

the design and/or implementation of
on-boarding/integration processes.
Organizational Development and Change

  • Provide guidance to regional management regarding

organizational changes and development.

  • Build and foster strong relationships within all

areas of HR and the business.

  • Assist in developing and implementing

organizational strategies and programs (e.g
performance management, talent management,
organizational development & planning, leadership
development and training).

  • Partner with Corporate HR on strategic succession

planning.
Performance Management

  • Assist with the Company’s performance management

initiatives.

  • Provide support, coaching and guidance to managers

during performance appraisals.

  • Assist managers in creating performance improvement

plans.
Legal and Compliance

  • Ensure policies comply with provincial legislation.
  • Study legislation, arbitration decisions, and

collective bargaining contracts to assess industry
trends.

  • Raise issues with managers, identify practical

solutions to complex and diverse HR issues and
recommend appropriate action plans.

  • Adhere to legislation such as the Human Rights Act,

Labour Relations Act and Employment Standards Act.

  • Remain current with best practices, legislative

changes and industry standards.

  • Ensure compliance with French Language Charter.

People Management

  • Oversee and manage HR staff by providing coaching,

mentoring and training as necessary. Perform annual
job performance reviews for direct reports.

  • Manage workload of department for the purpose of

maximizing the efficiency of the work force.

  • Provide leadership and direction to the local HR

team.

Position Requirements:

  • University degree in Human Resources Management or

Labour Relations. CHRP designation an asset.

  • Over 10 years’ progressive Human Resources

experience, preferably in Consumer Packaging Goods
environment

  • Ability to work well under pressure, individually

and as part of a team.

  • Proven conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to influence and persuade senior management

level

  • Ability to convey difficult and challenging

information

  • Proficient in MS Office software
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize work
