Position: Junior Accountant/Accounting Analyst (Contract)
With 34 years of operations, Skills for Change is a highly respected charity with a province wide reputation for pioneering programs that respond to shifting immigration and workplace trends, and lead to employment. We offer a range of accelerated programs including mentoring, employment, settlement, language training, together with specialized programs for trades, women, and youth. We have a budget of approximately $6 million, 7 locations across the GTA and Hamilton with over 70 full-time and part-time staff and serve 14,000 clients annually.
Reports to: Manager – Accounting & Financial Reporting
Tasks:
Accounts Payable: Process of payment against invoices – verify the invoice as to its approval, accuracy of the amount, analyze the proper GL and department coding to be used for accounting;
process the cheque, record in the cheque register and dispatch the same to payees;
Ensure unprocessed vendor invoices are properly accrued at month-end;
Banking- deposit the receipt of cash/cheques on the same day and record in the receipt register with the corresponding GL codes
Input in batches of ACCPAC Accounting Software;
Operate the Interac machine (Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Debit Card) as the need arises and process the batches weekly.
Process payroll through ADP [email protected] software;
Distribute the pay slips of the staff every pay period and maintain appropriate payroll records with details in each payroll files/sheets
Perform the following at the end of the month:
o Analyze entries made in Cash Disbursement especially General Account for departmental allocation
o Prepare the Payroll claim for each program
o Reconcile the facility fees with IAT staff (Faduma) against cash received, photocopy cards fees and visa and interac transaction
Prepare the formal monthly claims for different programs and submit to the designated Project officer on due date.
Completion and submission of HST reports to Canada Revenue Agency ( CRA );
Assist in the preparation of Charity Return to Canada Revenue Agency ( CRA );
Process the monthly staff/employer RRSP contributions statements
Prepare monthly Bank Reconciliation of bank accounts of the Agency
Perform the Monthly Balance Sheet Reconciliation
Do the following duties at the end of the year:
o Compare the payroll spreadsheet against staff’s T4 from ADP
o Make an analysis of the Purchase Services and issue T4A
Maintain records, filing system in proper manner to assist Auditor
Performs monthly analysis for budget vs. actual results by reviewing and investigating variances
Assist in the completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports accurately and on time
Prepare monthly recurring journal entries for financial statement preparation
Prepare monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts
Investigate discrepancies and makes recommendations for corrections
Assist in the preparation of management reports as on need basis
Assist in the preparation of annual budget of the Agency
Assist the Accounting Manager in the completion of spreadsheet for a Programs’ audit
Any other job/assignment as advised by Accounting Manager
Skills, Education and attributes
Completion of an accounting diploma or degree
Professional accounting designation (CGA/CMA/CA/CPA) or enrolment in the CPA program
Minimum 3-year experience in accounting in non-profit environment preferred
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Strong analytical, organizational, administrative and time management skills
Initiative, energy and persistence to complete tasks as well as excellent teamwork skills
Intermediate or advanced proficiency in Excel and ACCPAC Sage 300
Intermediate database skills
Good customer service experience
Ability to work within a team and independently
Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Reference
Sensitivity to, and understanding of, issues of concern to immigrants and refugees
TIME REQUIRED : A 35-hour week, Monday to Friday, with occasional evening hours
