Current Shift : 7:30am – 4:00pm (Monday- Friday) 12 months per year

(shift includes 1/2 hour unpaid lunch)

Pay Rate: $27.88 per hour

Qualifications required:

Locksmith Certificate or 4th yr Apprentice

Carpentry Certificate or 3rd yr Apprentice

Three years related locksmith experience in an industrial/commercial or institutional setting.

Knowledge of Master Keying system

Knowledge of Bitting List and Pinning Charts

Experience with installing/adjusting door closure

Experience picking locks, changing safe combinations, and making Impressions

Experience with electronic access control an asset

Experience installing numerous types of locks

Experience interpreting Building and Fire Codes

Duties may include:

Install, maintain and repair door locks, hardware and electronic wheelchair access.

Open and repair jammed filing cabinets and lock ups

Cut, issue and maintain records of issued keys

Maintain accurate record of locks and locations, using school plans, shop drawings and extensive use of database

Respond to emergency situations where buildings cannot be entered or secured due to broken or vandalized locks

Maintain an adequate inventory of stock

Perform carpentry work as required, as pertaining to locks, hardware, repairs and installations

Physical Plant Trades Maintenance (Carpentry, Electronics and Painting)

Under direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, performs skilled work in accordance with the appropriate designation as specified below involving the maintenance, repair, installation, and construction of structures, fixtures and equipment throughout the school district.

Saanich School District has a limited maintenance compliment and it will be required that Trades Maintenance employees perform work in cross-classification assignments as directed.



  • Plans projects, designs and determines material requirements
  • Operates computer based systems
  • Reads and interprets drawings and specifications
  • Provides estimates and advice on projects and keep records to track costs
  • Researches, orders, receives and inventories related supplies and equipment
  • Maintains tools and equipment in a safe and serviceable manner
  • Operates and is responsible for school district vehicles and power tools
  • Reports on work in progress
  • Performs emergency call-in maintenance duties outside of assigned hours as required
  • Supervises General Maintenance employees on a periodic basis
  • Liaises with employees, contractors, regulatory agencies and other trades as required

  • Designs, constructs, repairs, modifies, installs, services, maintains and dismantles structures, furnishings and equipment
  • Performs other duties as related to concrete laying, dry walling and floor covering, locksmithing, glass replacement and millwork
  • Maintains detailed records for Locksmithing


  • Installs, designs, programs, tests, and services intruder, fire alarm, emergency power and public address systems
  • Maintains and conducts annual inspections of fire extinguishers and fire hoses
  • Maintains detailed maintenance records for all systems to meet fire department and insurance regulations
  • Installs and troubleshoots wiring for all related systems
  • Facilitates external contractor installations and/or maintenance checks where appropriate and ensures integrity of entire system

Lead Painting

  • Coordinates the activities of Painting Maintenance personnel
  • Maintains records of paint finishes of buildings, equipment and fixtures
  • Prepares surfaces and applies decorating materials, including paints, stains, varnishes, lacquers and wall coverings
  • Performs duties from scaffolds and ladders, operates spraying equipment and fills, tapes and finishes drywall


  • Grade 12
  • Relevant trades ticket
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s license
  • Four years’ experience in related trade
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable codes and regulations (e.g., Building, and WCB, WHMIS regulations, etc.)
  • Valid licence(s) or ticket(s) required for trades designation (e.g. Gas Ticket, Oil Burner certification, Contractor’s Licence, Vehicle Inspector Card, etc.)
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software

  • Demonstrated effective, interpersonal and communication skills
