Title: Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) for Maple Ridge School District (SD42)
Full Time (35 hrs/wk)
Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Orients & supports students/families in the public school system
- Liaises between schools & families
- Performs formal review of newcomer needs across a broad spectrum of settlement areas (language, employment, housing, community connections, etc.)
- Develops, as needed, a Settlement Plan & follow-up support for newcomers based on identified needs & government / professional / school /community services available
- Refers clients to appropriate services as needed e.g. parent support groups
- Provides newcomers with client-centered settlement & integration information & orientation services about education in Canada & the community they intend to settle in
- Delivers one-on-one consultation in-person & by phone
- Provides information & orientation through workshops of interest to families & youth
- Liaises with government / professional / schools /community services as necessary to ensure the provision of accurate & detailed information to newcomers
- Plans & implements large & small events or programs for families, children & youth
- Occasionally, performs interpretation for workshop speakers
- Occasionally, translates resources for newcomers
- Outreach to newcomers through school visits & participating in community events
- Supplies up-to-date information to Regional Manager or Settlement Coordinator in respective region regarding changes to community services, government departments & procedures
- Works on improving program service outcomes & day-to-day services to newcomers by participating in professional development as assigned
- Performs other related duties as assigned by Regional Manager or Settlement Coordinator in Respective Region
Qualifications:
Education, Training & Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social or Human Sciences
- Experience working with immigrants &/or refugees
- Knowledge of settlement information & resources with a willingness to learn
- Knowledgeable of the geographic area served
- Experience in conducting workshops & events
- Experience in one-on-one settlement service delivery
- Excellent time & resource management skills
- Demonstrated skills in interpersonal & intercultural communication techniques
Job Skills and Abilities
- Fluent in spoken & written in English & second language
- Strong communication (written / verbal) & group facilitation skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Able to work independently & as a team
- Strong computer skills (including internet proficiency)
- Demonstrated active listening skills
- Ability to work with individuals & communities facing cultural adjustment challenges
- Ability to create & maintain client records & reports
- Ability to design, promote, deliver & facilitate orientation & education workshops
- Excellent narrative report writing skills in English
Other Requirements
- Able to travel among regions in Greater Vancouver
- Able to work at different service locations or schools within the district, when necessary
- Able to work evenings & weekends
- Criminal record check required
- Access to own vehicle required
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the IRCC components
Duration: Starts from immediately to March 31, 2017 (Continuation of position subject to confirmed funding)
