The Painter/Handyman will report to the Manager of Operations. This position performs skilled work involving the maintenance and repairs as well as various painting of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo facilities.

Position Type: 1 Temporary Full Time Positions Available (Paternity Leave Coverage)

Anticipated Start Date: September 30, 2016

Anticipated End Date: Dependant on return of incumbant

Pay Rate: 31.22 ($1 less while on probation)

    • Assesses in providing recommendations for long and short term maintenance requirements
    • Assist with the development of budget as related to Maintenance to the Operations Department
    • Install/uninstall machinery and equipment.
    • Troubleshoot and repair machinery and equipment and perform preventive maintenance on machinery in accordance with the preventative maintenance program.
    • Communicate with operators of machinery to verify smooth operations.
    • Perform maintenance related duties on buildings, grounds and equipment owned and operated by the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo.
    • Report items damaged or in need of repair, other than routine items, to the Manager of Operations.
    • The use of the FAME work order system.
    • Prepares various surfaces for painting by washing, scraping, burning, sanding, sandblasting or other means as necessary
    • Use brushes, rollers or spray guns to apply liquid coatings such as paint, stain or varnish to surfaces of wood, metal, brick, concrete, plaster, stucco or stone
    • Paints buildings, structures, equipment, and furniture using brush, spray gun or other applicator
    • Performs identification, safe handling, and appropriate disposal of paints, stains, preparatory and undercoating materials, and other hazardous materials.
    • Other maintenance duties, which may include but not be limited to such things as painting, snow removal and helping with special events.
    • Assists in moving heavy furniture, equipment and supplies

Qualifications: Education :

  • Completion of high school with some trade certifications.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 2-5 years’ experience in the construction, plastering and painting industry
  • Considerable knowledge of practices, tools, equipment and techniques associated with all trades.
  • possess the ability to troubleshoot and repair general commercial building and maintenance problems
  • Knowledge of industrial machinery and equipment.
  • Basic carpentry skills that include welding, cutting, and electrical work
  • Able to multi-task
  • Knowledge required to estimate, lay out and complete small remodeling projects such as framing walls, hanging and finishing drywall, installation of drop ceilings, painting, floor work, etc.
  • Experience with industrial spray painting with epoxy paint.
  • Experience in tile setting and installing carpet, rubber flooring, linoleum and hard wood flooring.
  • Experience in repairing and installing door hardware and windows
  • Experience in plumbing installation and repairs.
  • Ability to use and operate hand and power tools as needed in a safe, efficient manner.
  • The ability to work at heights
  • Self-motivated and the ability to work independently
  • The strength to move heavy ladders or set up scaffolding
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license


  • Work requires bending/stooping/reaching and lifting/carrying heavy objects weighing up to 100 pounds; twists torso 45 o to 90 o to perform essential functions; stand for extended periods of time
  • Climbs ladders and onto scaffolding; works in inclement weather and emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including bending, stooping, reaching, digging, carrying and lifting heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Requires manual dexterity of both hands and feet to perform activities such as lifting overhead, twisting and bending while lifting, climbing ladders and stairs while wearing protective equipment, and working in confined spaces, including repetitive arm motion below, at, and above shoulder level.
  • May be assigned to wear a respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) as needed.
  • This position may require travel between our various facilities within the Wood Buffalo Region. Access to reliable transportation is necessary.
