Co-op Student Fitness & Healthy Lifestyle – Summer Term

The co-op student will be utilized within the Fitness Unit and/or Healthy for Life Program to assist with the following activities that best fit the individual’s abilities, education and interests:

Marketing and Evaluation

Assist with the ongoing promotion and tracking of the second phase of Target Life, a department-wide incentive program, open to all employees. Compile data for key reports with a focus on medium and long term outcomes (i.e. attendance, enrolment, success stories, comments from participants, parents or recruits, feedback, etc.).

Program Planning

Create new challenges to accompany an activity-based behaviour change program that is offered to both members and their families during the summer months. Develop educational materials with the guidance of the Wellness Co-ordinator to be used for a traveling demo to all Peel Police facilities to highlight sun safety awareness including early detection of skin cancer. Research and develop new content for the Summer Kid’s Camp Leadership Program.


Assist with the testing/screening and follow-up process for recruits and employees who are participating in Fitness Pin testing, Functional Movement Screens and/or other assessments requested by individuals.


Maintain ongoing communications through multiple channels to ensure the employee population is updated on opportunities for participation and is made aware of services being offered that they can take advantage of. Address general enquiries from employees about programs, events and activities and forward to the Fitness staff or Wellness Co-ordinator as required.

General Duties

Perform administrative duties relating to the 2017 Special Olympics Summer Games with a focus on the annual Torch Run and the Opening Ceremony’s Final Leg event. Set-up equipment for fitness classes and testing sessions and assist with class instruction or exercise demos as needed. Work in collaboration with the Unit staff and contribute to the Team with ideas, research and best practices learnt in the academic environment. Participate in staff meetings and professional development opportunities that may be offered. Other duties as determined by the Fitness Unit or Healthy for Life Program objectives, with the needs of the organization being a priority.



These are the qualifications for the Fitness and Healthy Lifestyle position:

Ideally, the student must be studying in a kinesiology, physical education, recreation, health promotion or early childhood education program. The preference is for a senior student. Experience with children would be an asset but not mandatory.

Additional qualifications would be:

  • Valid CPR
  • First aid
  • Active personal lifestyle
