Job Title: Assistant Veterinary Technician Type: Permanent Full-Time Reports To: Head Vet Technician Type: Permanent Hours: Full Time hours (36-40 hrs/week); may include weekends The Assistant Veterinary Technician will be responsible for assisting the Head Veterinary Technician preparing animals for surgery, routine examinations, vaccinations and delivering prescribed treatments for in-house animals. The Assistant Veterinary Technician will also assist with the cleaning, sterilization and preparation of the mobile unit, instruments and supplies as needed. Representative Tasks and Major Responsibilities
v Assists the head or senior veterinary technician with preparing animals for surgery
v Cleans and prepares the surgical gowns, spay and neuter packs, hand towels and any other surgical instrument that requires cleaning and sterilization, including the mobile clinic.
v Assists the head veterinary technician with TPRs prior and after surgery.
v Cleans and sterilizes the mobile unit at the end of the day as needed.
v Observes and assists the head or senior veterinary technician in any way required.
v Assists the veterinarian with examinations and routine care of animals in house
v A strong dedication to animal welfare. v Knowledge in animal health and well being to include nutrition needs, resources for
information, knowledge of common animal diseases, skill in animal first aid and skill in performing euthanasia. Ability to identify animal species, breeds, ages and sexes. Ability to identify signs of animal illnesses and injuries.
v Demonstrated personal communication abilities to include effective phone skills, and the
ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally. v Ability to be flexible, resourceful, and innovative to implement plans and operate
effectively in an unpredictable environment.
v Impeccably organized and passionate about quality accuracy and attention to detail.
v Criminal Records check and Driver’s Abstract required on first day of employment.
v The employee must have successfully completed the VTNE. Active membership with the
Saskatchewan Association of Veterinary Technologists and registration with the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association are mandatory.
Education and Experience
v A veterinary technician diploma from a CVMA/AVMA accredited college v Will be required to provide an acceptable Police Record Check and driver’s abstract v Signed Code of Conduct
