Phoenix Youth Programs operates a Youth and Community Centre (PYCC) in Mulgrave Park. Our primary goal at the Centre is to work collaboratively with the community to develop relevant and meaningful programs for youth who face systemic and contextual challenges.

Our programming offers meaningful, community-based programming for youth in collaboration with parents, community members and other stakeholders. We primarily provide recreation, art, team-building, communication, life skills development, and employment and education support programming. Each of our programs fosters resiliency by increasing each youth’s sense of confidence, connection, and contribution to their community.

PYCC is currently hiring one Program Facilitator for its summer programs which will start on Monday, June 25th, 2018 and end on Friday, August 31st, 2018.

Program 1: Let’s Make It Happen!

A group of six youth, 16 -20 years old, participate in an eight-week pre-employability/ community service program.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the design of and implement the program’s activities.
  • Develop and deliver workshops and accompany youth on field trips.
  • Support youths’ exploration of educational and employment opportunities.
  • Support youth with goal setting and their community projects/volunteer work.
  • Mentor and role-model healthy communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Network with community organizations.
  • Assist with day-to-day activities such as meal planning and preparation, documentation and minor cleaning duties.
  • Assist with program evaluation.
  • Develop and maintain community relations and participate in community events.

Program 2: Mulgrave Magic

A group of 10-15 youth, 12-15 years old participate in an eight-week self- and career- exploration program.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the design of and implement the program’s activities.
  • Develop and deliver workshops and accompany youth on field trips.
  • Manage a budget.
  • Collaborate with community organizations.
  • Mentor and role-model healthy communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Maintain records and assist with program evaluation.
  • Liaise with parents.
  • Develop and maintain community relations and participate in community events.

Qualifications for all positions:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience working with youth.
  • Demonstrated experience in program development and delivery, including workshop facilitation.
  • Demonstrated high level of understanding of youth development and community engagement.
  • Demonstrated skill using a youth-directed approach.
  • Demonstrated high level of interpersonal, communication, youth service and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of pre-employment, work-related skill development, and job coaching an asset.
  • Emergency First Aid Training is an asset

Preference will be given to individuals who are familiar with and have connections within Halifax’s North End communities and who currently or previously have lived or worked there.

Salary: $18 per hour

Hours of work: 35 hours/week, Monday – Thursday, 9 am – 5 pm, Friday, 9 am – noon with some evening and week-end work as required. At the end of the summer there is a two-night camping trip and a weekend community event which require the Program Facilitators’ attendance.

Screening requirements: This position is subject to a satisfactory criminal record check including a vulnerable sector search, child abuse register check and proof of education.
