Position Overview

The Director of Maintenance is responsible for directing a dependable and cost effective fleet of vehicles and multiple facilities (3 locations spread out over the Greater Toronto Area), while simultaneously overseeing a work environment where the top priority is upholding a high standard of quality and safety as your department supports our people transportation operation. To excel in this role, the successful candidate must have previous experience in strategic planned maintenance and preventative maintenance within the Transportation Industry.

In addition, the Director of Maintenance will establish workforce and budget requirements, institute departmental objectives and develop a departmental strategic plan. The Director of Maintenance ensures compliance with all Pacific Western Transportation, Ltd. (PWT), Ministry of Transportation, FMCSA and OH&S regulations, policies, processes, procedures, codes and standards is required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coaching and leading the Maintenance Management Team;
  • Achieving financial objectives by preparing and adhering to an annual maintenance budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions
  • Reviewing, implementing and monitoring the current maintenance program while striving for continuous improvements and identifying current and planning for future maintenance requirements
  • Leading the strategic plans that align with the company strategy while enhancing and maintaining internal and external working relationship
  • Managing any discipline and approving all terminations in Maintenance division
  • Establish staffing requirements and initiate recruitment strategies in collaboration with Human Resources
  • Promoting safety programs, managing WSIB Cases, reviewing and implementing recommendations of the Joint Health & Safety Committee in collaboration with the Director of Safety
  • Ensuring compliance with all Company, Ministry of Transportation, FMCSA, OSHA and other applicable regulations, codes and standards

Desired Qualifications

  • Degree in business management or similar, and a specialization in transportation or vehicle maintenance and/or equivalent experience would be beneficial; Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician or Journeyperson Automotive Technician or Journeyperson Parts Technician with previous focus in Heavy Equipment on road vehicle parts
  • Minimum six (6) to ten (10) years management and leadership experience within the Transportation industry, specifically within a fleet maintenance environment
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of proper mechanical procedures, methods, tools, and techniques necessary with regards to maintaining our diverse fleet
  • Experience with WFA maintenance software considered an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of maintenance prevention, repair requirements as well as computerized vehicle maintenance programs and project management systems
  • Excellent planning, budgeting and human resource management skills
  • Successful responsibility of and management of multiple maintenance facilities and the ability to create new maintenance infrastructure and growth
  • Maintain a clear criminal record, a minimum of a Class D driver’s license with air brake endorsement, and a clean driver’s abstract
  • Possess proficient computer skills in MS Office Suite
  • Proven ability to strategically plan, including financial forecasting, analyzing, recognizing, reporting and implementing solutions
  • Exceptional communicator via all communication mediums with proven competency with oral, written, conflict resolution, presentation, negotiating skills
  • Must have strong leadership skills including delegating, mentoring, and promoting teamwork
  • Must have strong organizational skills including time management, project planning, multitasking in a frenetic work environment including managing a high volume of daily emails, phone calls, and meetings
  • Must be willing to travel as there are multiple locations reporting to this role; quarterly travel for corporate meetings also required
