The Health & Safety Officer is the central figure in the overall management of our safety program for the organization ensuring the culture and associated behaviors of the organization are as expected. This position works across the organization and with its partners to clearly communicate the expectations of the safety program and consistent execution in accordance with those expectations. Beyond the safety program, this position also has secondary responsibilities for the effective management of our uniform and small tool programs.

The following are the primary day to day responsibilities of the position:

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining the HSE management system including safety manual and all annual updates for all employees and subcontractors.
  • Assist the company and contract supervisors with incident investigations, analysis and preparation of incident reports and summaries.
  • Create and maintain company and project specific HSE documentation, such as manuals, plans, procedures, etc.
  • Assist the management team and supervision to actively participate in workplace observations and formal inspections.
  • Assist Supervisors/Foremans with Job Hazard Assessments (JHA), project start-ups and safe work procedures.
  • Lead weekly and monthly safety meetings.
  • Attend contractor safety meetings as required.
  • Demonstrate support for Overhead Door Co. of Edmonton overall HSE program by showing an exemplary attitude toward the health and safety of workers and the protection of the environment.
  • Ensure all documentation is field suitable for annual audits.
  • Ensure all workers are aware of the Health & Safety Codes and Work Safe Alberta regulations for work they actively participate in.
  • Hold Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee meetings on a monthly basis
  • Liase between company and contractor representative on all Health, Safety and Environmental concerns
  • Ongoing auditing of company and contractor Safe Work Performance and compliance to regulations and legislation
  • Review all incident reports ensuring positive corrective action have been applied in a timely manner and send to management.
  • Drive to various sites to perform safety checks with our employees.
  • Maintain COR certification and re-certification.
  • Complete and maintain all HSE Management accreditation programs that are needed to maintain contracts with our partners (e.g. Avetta, Complyworks, Contractor Check).
  • Provide all WCB letters of compliance, insurance information and COR documentation to customers when required.
  • Maintain safety statistics on a monthly basis with recommendations for improvement to management.
  • Order all safety equipment and supplies needed for employees to complete their jobs in a safe manner.
  • Distribute safety equipment when needed and maintain equipment for special jobs.
  • Submit all WCB claims when required and coordinate activities with our third party WCB case management provider.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Management of our uniform program for all warehouse and field personnel ensuring that our people are properly prepared for the applicable work environment. This includes working with our uniform supply partner to provide a certain level of performance.
  • Management of our small tool program which includes the sign in/out of tools by our field staff as well as the ongoing maintenance of those tools to ensure proper functioning for our people on various worksites.

The following are the required competencies for the position:

Education and Experience

  • Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification
  • 5 years experience as a Safety Advisor
  • Certified to complete internal COR audits
  • WCB claims management experience
  • Experience in managing the company health, safety and environmental department
  • Class 5 drivers license
  • Proficiency in MS Office products
  • First Aid
  • Additional “train the trainer” qualifications is an asset
