Day Camp Counsellor (also known as an Attendant: Outreach)

Number of opportunities: 2

Hourly wage rate range: $16.92- $19.82 (per collective agreement)

Hours/days per week: approximately 37.5, Monday to Friday

Contract length June 25th, 2018 to August 31st 2018

Full time summer employment for approximately 10 weeks as part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Candidates must currently be enrolled in school and provide proof of registration for Fall 2018 at time of hire to be eligible. Candidate must be available to fulfill the length of the contract.

A bit about us and the role

The Ottawa Humane Society offers a number of programs geared toward the next generation of animal lovers. In this role you will be responsible for facilitating child & youth programming for our popular Off-Leash day camps for children aged 6 to 12 years old.

Our ideal candidate(s) must have experience working with children and youth in a group setting, ideally in a camp or day camp setting. You must have great presentation skills, a passion for animal welfare and be able to communicate in English to a variety of audiences. You must be First Aid certified or able to secure it before your first day, energetic and ideally have some animal handling experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 graduation diploma
  • Minimum of three months experience working with children and youth
  • First aid certification
  • Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills
  • Ability to relate to persons of all ages and of diverse backgrounds, skills and abilities
  • Animal handling experience preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in
  • English Bilingual ( English/French) skills preferred

Conditions of Employment and Working Conditions:

  • Employees will be required to work weekend and holiday shifts
  • Employees will be required to wear a uniform designated by the employer
  • Employment is conditional upon the ability to work around all species of animals safely
  • Employment is conditional upon maintaining confidentiality of OHS information

Your duties include:

  • Host and facilitate events for children and youth at our Off Leash camp
  • Provide a professional experience
  • Supervise children and child-animal interaction
  • Ensure animals and children safe at all times
  • Lead educational activities, entertainment and games at OHS Off Leash camps
  • Conduct tours of the Ottawa Humane Society
  • Plan, set up and take down of decorations and equipment
  • Schedule volunteers and animals with the appropriate staff and managers
  • Communicate with parents and children in a professional way
  • Be thoroughly familiar with pertinent regulations, guidelines and OHS policies.
  • Monitor supplies
  • Take final payments for programs, as required
  • Be familiar and ensure compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures
  • Maintain the facility and equipment
  • Represent the OHS in a professional manner
  • May be required to participate in public relations and promotional activities
