Under the general supervision of the Manager, OHS Operations and Training (the “Manager”), the Health and Safety Advisor (the “Advisor”) is responsible for fostering a culture of health and safety; developing, coordinating, scheduling, delivering and documenting occupational health and safety initiatives and programs that create awareness and motivation; providing tools to employees that help them adapt and maintain a healthy lifestyle; and liaising with community agencies to provide employees with access to local resources if needed. The Advisor assists the Manager in planning, developing, implementing and administering health, safety and emergency plans, programs and activities based on system based approaches such as OHSAS18001, ISO14001 and CSAZ1000. The Advisor acts as an advisor to the Manager, in addition to management, employees and students, to ensure that regulatory compliance is maintained through evaluative actions such as formal inspections, program reviews and in preparation for Certificate of Recognition (COR) audits. The Health and Safety Advisor also works to ensure that Okanagan College standards and practices in health, safety and emergency management are continuously improving through effective training, development and collaborative networks. The Advisor conducts or assists in conducting assessments, audits, and investigation of incidents, accidents and losses; and, as required, prepares reports and recommendations. The Advisor identifies and reports situations to the Manager which may require the issuance of isolation, evacuation, closure or stop work orders until corrective action is taken. The Advisor takes a lead role in ensuring contractor safety by coordinating, updating, tracking and orientating contractors on all campuses with respect to Okanagan College’s Contractor Safety Program including attending toolbox meetings prior to contractors beginning site work to ensure related WSBC requirements are adhered to. The Advisor assists the Manager in conducting a yearly audit of OHS practices to achieve WSBC’s Certificate of Recognition (COR) which includes development and promotion of a Health and Safety Management System, hazard and risk assessments, employee training and certification, workplace inspections, incident investigations, and effective Joint Health and Safety Committees. The Advisor conducts Ergonomic Assessments, Physical Demands Assessments, and Workstation setups as required, follows up with employees and supervisors, and documents and tracks outcome. The Health and Safety Advisor participates at monthly health and safety meetings and acts as a resource to the Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHS) committees, Health and Safety Steering Committee and Human Resources as required.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent and a minimum 2 years from an accredited Canadian Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) program, or health related field. 2-4 years’ directly related experience including delivering occupational health, wellness and safety or emergency management programs. Must hold and maintain a current Occupational First Aid Certificate, Level 3 and have and maintain a valid BC driver’s licence.
Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (35 hour work week). Variable work schedule may be required at times.
